Details of Natasha Richardson's Ski Accident

3/17/2009 1:31 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

natasha richardsonWe now know what happened to Natasha Richardson on the ski slope when she was critically hurt yesterday, suffering a brain injury.

We're told she was having a private lesson on a green slope (beginner) at a ski resort in Quebec, Canada. She fell -- we're not sure why. There was no blood and no sign of impact. Two ski patrollers came to her rescue. When they got there she was conscious -- smiling and making jokes.

An hour later, Natasha started to complain of a headache and said she didn't feel well. Someone from the resort called 911, and she was taken to the hospital in an ambulance. Natasha was conscious when she left the resort.

#98... treatment in Canada? please. let's focus back on Rchardson. Her family has the right to have her attended to by physicians and a hospital they know. Mr. Expert on medical systems, Canada is not exactly a 3rd world country. Unfortunately most doctors form Canada end up working in the states for monetary dr. you think is great may be a closet Canadian... I hope she is doing well and at least resting comfortably...

Probably suffered whiplash since reports are she hit nothing. But if you are going fast enough and fall, even slight whiplash can cause breakage in the veins in the brain. Hence, the bleeding, but no sign of outward trauma. My guess is whiplash. This is why we have head rests on our seats in our cars. Even a small amount of whiplash can result in serious injury, sometimes days after an accident.

No helmet would have helped in this case. In essence, it is sort of a freak accident as it occurred on a bunny slope. But she might be particularly susceptible to such a situation.

#98... I have an issue with your "boggled by lack of treatment in Canada" comment...but this site is about what happened to Richardson. All her family and friends are in New York and sometimes hearing voices of those you love can help...naive...perhaps...but it's comforting to be optimisitc...

As far as I know, a close friend of hers has said that they hold very little hope for her, my prayers and thoughts go to her family, a very sad and tragic accident. What most likely happened is that she suffered a head injury, which caused her brain to swell, and the skull, in a mature adult, does not allow for any swelling, and as the brain aexands, it meets the skull and suffers more injury as it is enclosed in a tight shell, once this happens, only a small puncture to the skull to relieve the swelling, or actaully cracking the skull, can save the patient. A very serious injury, and one that most do not recover from, and even if they do, there could be a lot of changes to motor functions and personality. Sad.

It sounds like she had an aneurism or a stroke. It doesn’t take a major fall to get either & may occur without an injury. Very sad to happen to anyone.

I can't believe the idiots who make fun of a tragic situation. I had just watched "The Parent Trap" Sunday. How ironic. Prayers to her family.

Yes, probably an aneurysm. She may not have felt anything before falling. She got up, felt fine. Very classic case. I once took care of a young woman in the hospital. She had been on a Sunday drive with hubby and kids. She said she felt a bit of a "pop" in her head. Next, she developed a severe headache. When she was admitted to ICU, she was alert, and talkative. Her vital signs were stable. One hour later, she had decompsenated by 90%. Within a couple of hours she was officially brain dead. She was in a vegetative state after that. She was with us for several weeks before being trasferred out of town to a long term care facility. Very, very sad. Please be sure to be observed after any kind of strange feeling in your head, or any injury, no matter how minor it seems.

Carrie Singer

There are three basic bleeds in the head, named for the space where the bleeding occurs.

Subdural hematoma. Usually a slow, chronic bleed from a vein, can last for years. Ronald Reagan had one.

Epidural hematoma. A bleed from an artery, with fairly rapid onset, and can be related to a thin skull fracture or minor injury. Even a farmer can treat this, on the side of the dilated pupil, with an electric drill.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage. Bleeding into the loose subarachnoid space, spreading around the brain. Often caused by a small aneurysm (looks like a bubble on an artery). It may not be related to trauma.

Very sad. Good family friend died the same way. Thought she broke her nose on hand railing going up the stairs. Turned out she suffered some sort of severe whiplash and was brain dead in three hours. Very tragic situation. I feel for her entire family.

A few years ago my friend took a minor fall on a beginners ski slope. At a reputable ski center, sometimes, just under the snow surface are rocks, sharp, hard rocks. My friend, from one fall, landed on a buried rock that sheered her knee open, with surgical precision. There was no blood but she was seriously injured. It is so unfair that Natasha was critically injured and might lose her life ,not knowing that she was putting her life at risk, After all it was a beginners slop but because her "instructers" did not understand or communicate what "lays below the surface" It was if she was on her own and not protected by the "Ski Pro whose responsibility it is or should be
