Angels Pitcher Adenhart Killed After Ball Game

4/9/2009 11:49 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

TMZ has learned Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a felony hit-and-run car accident in Fullerton, California early this morning -- hours after he pitched in a game last night.

Nick Adenhart: Click to watch
Cops say someone driving a minivan blew through a red light, causing the Mitsubishi that Adenhart and three others were riding in to hit a light pole. Three of the four people in the Mitsubishi were killed in the crash -- Nick, another man and a woman -- while the fourth person remains in the hospital.

Cops say the person driving the van fled the scene -- but was later caught and charged with felony hit-and-run. The suspect is also being treated for injuries in a local hospital.

We're told one of the other men killed in the crash was also affiliated with the Angels organization.

Nick was 22 years old.

FYI -- Nick pitched his ass off last night, striking out 5 guys in 6 scoreless innings. His performance was hailed by sportswriters as a "brilliant effort by a 22-year-old right-hander making his fourth Major League start."

The video posted here with the reaction of a girl smiling and laughing while discussing such a devastating tragedy should be taken down. This was someones sister, daughter, and friend who was killed. I and others who have seen this video found the reaction to be very disturbing and disrespectful to all involved.

How come the girls they interviewed are smiling and the other's laughing? What's wrong with them...? There's nothing happy or funny about this at all.

That's right, those girls smiling and laughing is inappropriate. And how does she know someone was doing 80 mph?

Let them baseball fans in the jail get a hold of him, I'm sure they'd love to hear about this one. He should never be able to drive another day in his life or see another day of freedom for what he has done. This is just too sad and such a shame. I feel really bad for those in the ball player's car.

I'd really like to thank TMZ for posting such a classy video interview. Incredible job with the interviewer and interviewed making it seem like it was really funny and that a tragedy hadn't just occurred. Really goes to show people will do anything for attention huh?

This is such a sad and tragic loss. For such a brilliant future to be cut short by someone who has not learned their lesson about drinking and driving. To realize your life's dream, and then have it snatched away mere hours later, is cruel and extremely sad. I hope the person responcible not only spends the rest of his life in prison, but at long last learns his lesson. Too late for Nick and his friends. My heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of all those lost and injured. RIP Nick. We will miss you...

I am Nick Adenhart's aunt in Maryland and I want to thank TMZ for the considerate and thoughtful coverage of his horrible death, We are still in shock and trying to deal with it the best we can. Tonight there was a tribute at Williamsport High school and was attended by many people who loved him. He will be missed forever. Thanks to all his fans who have taken the time to share their love and grief.

I read this story at first as a headline and thought "how terribly sad". Then I read a more in depth article and learned that his father was in the stands last night and they were staying in a hotel together....and his mother (his parents apparently are divorced) was flying into town tonight to see her son after his AWESOME pitching performance. The tragedy just multiplies as you learn more about it. BUT....it is a, ever so small comfort, to know that his family realizes he was one of the :"lucky" ones to recognize his dream of being a major league baseball player. And at the moment of his untimely death, he was most assuredly, ecstatic and taking in all the realizations of not only his accomplishments, but of the love that surrounded him throughout his life to allow him to be accomplished. Rest in peace and heartfelt condolences to all who knew him, loved him and supported him. And let us not forget the others who perished....for their names may not be "headliners", but their time here on Earth should be no less remembered.

I live not too far from the crash site and only a few hours ago they still had the whole intersection blocked off and the police were doing their investigating still. Very sad.
