MJ Memorial Donations -- Next to Nothing

The city of Los Angeles has only received $17,000 of the $1.4 million it cost to put on Michael Jackson's memorial -- but it's not because MJ fans are cheap ... it's because of the complete failure of the official donation website.

The press release from Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa says, "The city's Information Technology Agency could not handle the high volume of traffic or adequately respond to receive contributions for several hours Tuesday afternoon ... for at least 12 consecutive hours Tuesday evening ... and periodically throughout Wednesday morning."

So Villaraigosa is begging MJ fans to go back to the website and cough up a donation -- but please, not all at once.

9. WTF...donations?? I'll make a note of that - have my kids charge a door fee at my memorial to cover the cost of the bar. Why couldn't the cost be paid from the deceased's estate like with everyone else???

10. Why did they need to go begging to the public in the first place? If the Jackson family and AEG wanted to put on this big memorial they should be the ones to pay for it and the associated costs such as the police escorts and protection.

15. Despite the budget crisis, LA and CA should gladly pay the tab. Look at how much money MJ made for the city in taxes and the number of out of towners who, while coming to pay tribute, stimulated the LA economy
