Harvard Prof 911 Call Contradicts Police Report

7/27/2009 11:11 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

We've got the 911 call that eventually resulted in the arrest of Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. -- and it completely contradicts what cops say the 911 caller told them when they arrived at the scene.

Gates 911 Call

In the 911 call, the dispatcher asks the caller, Lucia Whalen, "Were [the alleged intruders] white, black, or Hispanic?" Whalen responds: "Um, well there were two larger men. One looked kind of Hispanic but I'm not really sure. And the other one entered and I didn't see what he looked like at all. I just saw it from a distance." She also said they were carrying two suitcases.

In the police report, however, Officer Crowley claims Whalen told him she saw "what appeared to be two black males with backpacks."

So the question is: Did Crowley fudge the report, or did Whalen change her story?

Wow, they're lucky in Cambridge.

In many cities, you could be lying half-dead in the street and would be lucky if the cops showed up to help.

Officers DO NOT speak with 911 callers during their calls. It is a 911 dispatcher that is passing on the info. I am so glad that the 911 call and the other communications between the officers and dispatch are being released. Now everyone will get a full detailed picture of how things went down and who was yelling racial slurs and who was not.

It seems like the dispatcher was ignorant! Asking were they black or hispanic(never asking if they were white)the caller told him over and over again that the men had suit cases and did not know if they just got locked. This was a simple case and the dispacter probably called it in as if two black men were breaking the home. The caller is not to blame for any of this. Blame the dispatcher! He was the one racial profiling!

You know when people say "if it had been a white person they wouldn't have done that." CRAP!!

How the hell do you know what they would have done? To assume a white person would have been treated any differently, is a racist statement itself. You know, it is true, the racism these days is blacks against white people. If this keeps happening, and race does become an issue again, this could backfire and it could be a real bad thing for black people. I think we should all back up, and not make this an issue. NONE of us, want to even go there. We could erase years of progress if we do. This was not a race issue, it was just like the thousands of belligerent people we see every Saturday on Cops. That's it. The easiest card for this guy to play was the race card, well SHAME ON HIM!

And just because it was his own house? So What? He thought there was a break-in and Gates was there. I think Black people have made this into a race issue because it is convenient. When a cop asks you something you stop what you're doing, and you give them the information they request. Period. No smart remarks, no YO MOMMA jokes, just give them what they want, because they are here for OUR safety. They can't possibly know everything when they pull up to a home, that's what the cops were trying to figure out. Gates had to open his LOUD mouth and now we're really about to have a race war in America, thanks to Gates and Obama. Don't you know the KKK is loving this? GATES NEEDS TO ISSUE AN APOLOGY TO ALL OF THE US, FOR BEING A JERK AND MAKING THIS INTO SOMETHING IT SHOULD NOT BE. The majority of americans elected a black man into office, that means the majority isn't racist. If you think you're going to wipe it from every inch of the US you're crazy, there will always be racists. We just need to be happy with our progress, and shut up about it. It is a free country, that means free to love, and free to hate, and unfortunately there will always be those that hate. So lets leave them be, and live our lives, and stop making issues where they are NOT.

PLEASE POINT FINGERS AT THE DISPATCHER!!! IT'S HIS FAULT! HE IS THE ONE ASKING IF THEY ARE BLACK OR HISPANIC. IT SHOULD NOT HAVE MATTERED WHAT COLOR THEY WERE! THE DISPATCHER IS THE ONE WHO IS RACIAL PROFILING! I DON'T THINK CRAWLY HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THAT. HE SIMPLY WENT LOOKING FOR TWO BLACK MEN OR TWO HISPANIC MEN BREAKING IN, BECAUSE OF WHAT THAT IDDIOT DISPACTER SAID! BY THE WAY, HISPANICS CAN BE BLACK OR WHITE DUMB DISPATCHER!!!

it doesn't matter. i have seen enough events in my life to know that people will say different things at different intervals which is why the 911 tapes are always crucial evidence that can outweigh statements to police officers. time passes, more things occur, and of course the officer begins probing questions. it doesn't matter. again the ultra race sensitive press is looking for ANYTHING to crucify this cop on the basis of race. like i posted on my blog...if somebody is seen forcing their way through my door, i don't care if they are white, green, yellow, red, black, or translucent, call the authorities...even if the cop was a little overly aggressive, i prefer him to do so especially when gates, if you believe the officer's account, refused to provide any i.d. and then arrogantly trumps his university badge and NOT his state issued id or driver's license. gates was looking for a fight because he was frustrated that HE left his keys...how many phd's did it take to do that and the poor white brother had no clue who he was. as he shouldn't since i'm sure gates doesn't teach on that level to white students @ harvard. academic arrogance not racism was at fault here and gates could have defused the whole matter IN THE BEGIINNING by doing the following:

"officer," as he reaches for his DL or state issued ID NOT harvard, "thank you for protecting my property. i know this looks a bit crazy but i do live here. here's my i.d. and some pieces of mail. i teach at harvard [NOW show harvard badge] so i am aware of the tough job it is serve in this community. if i sounded a bit irritated it's been one of those days. do you want a drink of water or anything for the road?"

not the "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM!!!" he lost his cool and temporarily lost his freedom all because HE didn't follow directions. that would be a failing grade in HIS classroom i'm sure...

MADRADDER, Great comments.

And to this FOOL:
27. A black man gets arrested in his own house, and for what? Challenging police? This is racism 101.

This article sums it up quite nicely:

If you think "black Attitude" is ok and acceptable, and more importantly, above the law...you're an idiot.

dear traceb

if you understand anything about police protocol you'd realize that race is a factor in determining identity of an assailant or possible suspect as well as that of the victim--thus police reports have racial boxes. why? because the doj asks to make sure agencies track against gender and race in the 80's after some "funny" crime stats. lastly, how would you describe someone to another individual of another race? you're saying that one of the top 3 things or 5 things you'd personally mention would be race. i doubt it...

14. As a successful black man in America, Gates obviously has a chip on his shoulder., someone who feels slighted by the teeniest of reasons. And most likely, Crowley suffers from authoritative complex, like most policemen, someone who thinks no one should be able to challenge their authority. So mix the two, and you have this. From what it looks like, Gates over-reacted and made a scene just so he can exploit the "injustice" for his own agenda.Posted at 4:28PM on Jul 27th 2009 by LWH

Do you think the chip on his shoulder is because he KNOWS he is not deserving of his position & only got into Harvard because of affirmative action accepting him in place of someone more qualified?

That was the most sensible thing anyone has said regarding this incident. And I quote what the person said...

TMZ did not hear the same 911 call I heard. Either that, OR they are starting on a path of revisionist partisan propaganda for the democrats. Get life TMZ, the truth is OUT and GATES is and was a race baiting agitator looking for trouble. Crowley was there to help protect his property and GATES went wild and got insulting and abusive. He should have been taken to a psychological facility for evaluation.
