Fans Boo Madonna

for Defending 'Gypsies'

8/27/2009 1:50 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Madonna was hit with a tidal wave of boos at her concert in Bucharest -- pronounced booooo′kÉ™ rest′ -- Romania last night, when she stopped her concert to raise awareness about the discrimination of "Gypsies" across Eastern Europe.

Despite the boos, Madonna -- who was accompanied onstage by Roma (aka Gypsy) performers -- didn't even flinch as the crowd became unruly, finishing her point saying, "freedom and equal rights for everyone ... Gyspies ... homosexuals .. people who are different."

After the rant, Madonna can be heard saying the words "god dammit" in frustration. That happens about 1:20 into the clip.

- Romani people are an ethnic group with origins in South Asia who are widely dispersed with their largest concentrated populations in Europe, especially Central and Eastern Europe, with more recent diaspora populations in the Americas and, to a lesser extent, in North Africa and the Middle East.

- Roma is a subgroup among the Romani people who live primarily in Central and Eastern Europe.

- The only Romani who embrace being called "gypsies" are those indigenous to Spain, who refer to themselves in the Spanish translation of the word - Gitanos.

Etymology of the word "Gypsy" -
The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) states that a gypsy is a
"member of a wandering race (by themselves called Romany), of Hindu origin, which first appeared in England about the beginning of the 16th c. and was then believed to have come from Egypt".

The OED records the first usage of the word in English as 1514, with several more in the same century, and that both Edmund Spenser and William Shakespeare used the word.[1]

The word derives from the word for "Egyptian" in Latin, the same as the Spanish Gitano or the French Gitan.

It emerged in Europe, in the 15th century, after their migration into the land of the Romani people (or Roma) in that continent.[2]

They received this name from the local people either because they spread in Europe from an area named Little Egypt, in Southern Balkans or because they fitted the European image of dark-skinned Egyptians skilled in witchcraft.

During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the world 'Gypsy' was written in various ways:
- Egipcian
- Egypcian
- 'gipcian
-'gypcian.[3]

As the time elapsed, the notion of Gypsy evolved including other stereotypes, like nomadism, exoticism.[4] John Matthews in The World Atlas of Divination refer to gypsies as "Wise Women."[5]

Gypsies are the illegal aliens of Europe. But at least they aren't Islamic terrorists.

I'm not that keen on Madge but if a group is either being kept down, or keeping themselves down because they don't know better than there is no harm to help them a little. I think Madonna has good intentions but the audience wasn't having it. Kinda sad when you think about it.

I've dealt with people of Gypsy blood here in the US and I can tell you, it's nothing like the horror stories I'm reading about here. You would never know in some cases.

Musicians are musicians - not politicians. Just shut up and play your music. Or better yet this old bag needs to retire.

The Punjab or the rest of India have nothing to do with the Gypsies so please do not confuse the two. We are separate people and we are not gypsies in any way.

re: #115/Sita,

Actually, Indians have much to do with Romani people in terms of genetics as well as ancient cultural and linguistic ties. You descend from some of the same bloodlines, at the least the Dravidian people of ancient India. Specifically, modern day Gypsies share the closes ancestral and cultural ties with the Dom, or Domba, People an Indo-Aryan ethnic group of South Asia and the Middle East.

It's stupid arrogant for an American to say something like this... Of course, she is SO right, but please, after what happened in Iraq, America should shut up for at least 50 years. Same for Obama.

Hope these gypsies don't come to America. We've already got enough "gypsies" from south of the border. America is already on it's way to becoming a 3rd world country. At least we got rid of Madonna (Shipped off to England).

Why can't Romania just buy them a movie studio so they can all cast themselves in Wolfman movies? Better yet, have Cher go there and apologise for the song Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves...

I am a Romanian. I live in Bucharest. No gipsy have ever stolen her money, putting the knife on her kneck, no gipsy has ever raped her children , or her, because she is living ..where she is living. Imagine her reaction if one of her children were f...cked by gipsies, like they usually do, and not only in Romania , but also in Italy, or England. I live in Romania and Madonna screw it, this time, and her voice is over. So the gipsies, she has no ideea about...I am sorry.
