Washington Redskins -- The Supreme Challenge

9/15/2009 11:30 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Washington Redskins -- The Supreme ChallengeThe war over the Washington Redskins -- the most offensive team name in professional sports -- might finally go to the U.S. Supreme Court.

A group of American Indians is asking the highest court in the land to cancel the trademarks on the Redskins team name and logos -- due to the fact that they're extremely defamatory toward Native Americans.

The American Indian group has been fighting this battle since 1992. They won a ruling in 1999 ... but the decision was defeated soon after by judges who decided they waited too long to bring their case to the courts.

The Redskins -- worth a reported $1.5 billion -- have been using the name since 1933.

Now, the Native American group wants SCOTUS to review the lower court decision -- and finally force Washington to understand why naming an NFL team after the color of someone's skin could be offensive.

the Washington Redskins have been using their name for over 75 years. Why did it take so long for them to come forward? i am a redskins fan and do not think that this name is offensive. If they really want to get on it, WHAT ABOUT THE BRAVES AND INDIANS? They are offensive as well, if you want to get right down to it. HAIL TO THE REDSKINS! HAIL VICTORY!

I'm not Native American but I can understand how some Native Americans can be offended by using Indian nicknames, especially, The Redskins. Even the term sounds racist. Of course most of the posters on this site disagree with the Indians point of view because most of the posters on this forum are white and wouldn't understand. I wonder how they feel about the Atlanta Braves?

... and the lawyers are laughing all the way to the bank.
Don't these people have anything better to do with their time and other people's money?

So, free speech is good as long as it's speech you like? Sorry, but if you find it offensive, feel free to protest outside the stadium and organize boycotts or whatever. But you can't make a name illegal just because you don't like it. And while I don't personally know how they feel about "redskin" (as I've never asked), the Indians I know here in Texas and Oklahoma prefer "Indian" to "Native American."

Your mastery of the English language is pathetic. Go read a book instead of TMZ.

45. #43---ignorance at its finest. I guess you think you're "clever" and could care less how many people you offend by your words. Never mind you have minorities serving this country making sure you have the rights you so easily throw around. I'm sure you've never served anything more than a drink. Pathetic!

I DO NOT THINK THAT THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS NAME IS OFFENSIVE. IF THEY HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE REDSKINS WHAT ABOUT THE BRAVES AND INDIANS. WHY WAIT SO LONG TO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE NAME. THEY HAVE BEEN THE REDSKINS OVER 75 YEARS AND THE BRAVES BEFORE THAT. HAIL TO THE REDSKINS! HAIL VICTORY!

I can't believe the poll results. What if the name of the team was the Black skins with a Logo of a black face? There would be a outrage. There is no difference. All should be equal no matter what race. Granted the teams name and logo has been around for many years but it still should be changed like the other things have changed the last 50 years. Just cause something has been around for years it doesn't make it right.

Okay so my husband is a HUGE football fan. He would say why change it now, but alot of people would see it differently if they were called the Washington Negros. All I am saying is look at it from the Native Americans point of view. They deserve a little respect too!!!

PEOPLE NEED TO STOP CLAIMING THE WORLD OWES THEM SOMETHING JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE A MINORITY!!!!!!!!!!!!! GROW UP AMERICA! DAMN!!! i am a redskins fan, and i'm also american indian and this is not offensive! they have had this name for a long time. get over it. there are a lot more things to get upset over than taking a NFL's football team's name and saying it's "offensive". stop trying to take every avenue you can to get money. earn it like the rest of us hard working legal AMERICAN'S are doing.

75 years of washington redskin tradition does not compare to our eons of traditions of fighting for our rights and our culture.

Calm down..people...everything is offensive to someone...this is a multi million dollar industry...I am 100% Irish, therefore, I want the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame to do away with their trademark..If you look hard enough and long enough...you can find something that annoys you or offends you! GIVE ME A BREAK...The logo for the Washington Redskins, to me, looks dignified...It does not have a cartoon character with a hachet!!! CHILL

Why don't they quit their whining?? You don't ever hear of other peoples complaining about team names. You never hear this crap from the descendants of pioneers, the Irish, descendants of patriots, cowboys, miners, boilermakers, the Catholic church (saints), and the list could go on and on and on....
