Former NY Giants star Plaxico Burress was just sentenced to two years in federal prison for criminal possession of a weapon.

Burress -- who was surrounded by his wife, son and father -- was immediately taken into custody following the hearing which happened just moments ago in New York.

Right after Plax heard his sentence, the 32-year-old NFL star hugged his wife and cradled his son. It was during this emotional moment that Plax began to tear up. The other members of Plaxico's family also began to cry in the courtroom.

Moments later, Plaxico stood up and made a statement in front of the judge saying, "I apologize to my family ... I thank everyone for their support."

Plaxico then walked from the courtroom into a holding area. He was never placed in handcuffs while inside the courtroom.

Plax accidentally shot himself in the leg in a NYC nightclub back in November 2008.

The gun was unlicensed and no one initially called police.

Can't Stand Obama

He isn't going to prison for shooting himself in the leg. He had an unlicensed gun - that's why he is going to prison. He should have made his gun all legal then he wouldn't be in prison right now.

Good thing he shot himself and not someone else. Obviously he doesn't know how to handle a gun.

He's a Celeb...he will be out in a couple of months...so don't rain on his parade just yet. Dudes like him always get a break. Chris Brown should have done some jail time, too...I am sure his time will come. (what comes around goes around, right from where it started...ALWAYS) That is why people say to treat others as you would yourself.

It's a mandatory 2 years in prison in NY for what he did. Maybe a thug like that should think before he acts. What does he need a gun for anyway??? Anyone who says he got screwed is ignorant. The law is the law, it's there for a reason. If he just took 2 minutes out of his time to look it up, he wouldn't be spending 2 years in prison.

First I wanna say that I do not agree with him taking a gun into a night club but with that said...he shot HIMSELF...yes it COULD have been someone else but it wasn't...a stiff fine...long probation and alot community service would have been enough...this is stupid!!!!

So he gets 2 years for shooting himself in the leg and Michael Vick gets 23 months for viciously abusing animals and runing a dog fighting ring? Anybody else see anything wrong with this?

I love how he's holding his child in the photo. Maybe you should have stayed home with that child instead of clubbing it with other complete morons. Enjoy your time idiot. I'm sure those kids really appreciate your stupidity.

I was so glad when they showed this on TV that other staff people jumped on Harvey for being shocked that Plaxico got two years in prison. The fact is, the man had a concealed, unregistered weapon and brought it into a club with the safety off. He's just very lucky that the only person he hurt was himself, otherwise he'd be facing a much stiffer sentence. I think he deserves every minute of the two years.

#43, I'm not going to argue the whole Second Amendment thing. However, even if you think it guarantees people the right to bear arms, it does NOT guarantee them the right to carry CONCEALED, UNLICENSED guns. THAT'S what he is in prison for.

I read...
Because he was a high-profile inmate, Burress was placed in a protective custody unit

please explain to me why a person should be treated differently because they're famous... you do the crime you do the time, WITH THE BIG BOYS

WHEN IS THIS BS OF MULTI TIER "JUSTICE" GOING TO END???? OR WHY SHOULD IT, LAWYERS HAVE TO EARN THEIR MONEY SOMEHOW... DOESN'T WORK IN AN EGALITARIAN SYSTEM.
