KFC Ad -- OK for Australia, Racist for US?

1/6/2010 2:40 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Placating a crowd of black people with a bucket of chicken is considered good marketing by Kentucky Fried Chicken in Australia -- but it's causing a bit of a fervor here in the States.

The ad shows a very distressed white guy, surrounded by a crowd of black people at a cricket match, who wonders, "Need a tip when you're stuck in an awkward situation?" He gets out of the "awkward situation" by handing them a bucket of chicken.

A rep for KFC Australia told a local paper, "It is a light-hearted reference to the West Indian cricket team ... The ad was reproduced online in the US without KFC's permission, where we are told a culturally-based stereotype exists, leading to the incorrect assertion of racism."

UPDATE -- We just got this statement: "KFC Australia is removing the television advertisement that was being run in conjunction with the Australian cricket season. We apologize for any misinterpretation of the ad as it was not meant to offend anyone."

7. I have heard that Australia is extremely racist, too many times over the span of several years. So it seems to me there must be some level of truth to it.

With that said, the ad was probably produced with humorous intentions, but it does have racist undertones when you consider that it was intended ONLY for Australia.

Biggest problem here, is that people in general can't seem to overcome racial stereotypes. I'd have seen this as just a commercial. Why? Because i dont give a crap about the color of peoples skin. Guess what? I LOVE CHICKEN!! Wanna know something else? Im WHITE?? OMG IM RACIST!! (just kidding of course, for those who have no sense of humor) I'd eat chicken 3 x's a day if i could! People need to get over themselves and there stupid hatred. THAT'S the problem.

There was a white-dude to his far left, and it looked like the music was getting to him, not the fact that he was surrounded by the brother-hood.

I'z is from Kentucky, and we like our chicken.
Pam Anderson and her chicken-hating ways, we can do without.

Dear lord! Its amazing how ignorant some people are on here. Its not awkward because he's surrounded by black people its awkward because he supports the rival team.

America! The rest of the world does not have the same stereo types that you do. The whole Blacks love chicken is an American stereo type not that well known in the rest of the world.

Tell me this what's more racist. Watching that ad like Australians and any country that has an interest in Cricket does and seeing a guy in an awkward situation because he's surrounded by rival supporters. Or immediately thinking about the fact that he's surrounded by black people?

Heres a hint. Its the second one.

9. The fact that we in the U.S. find it racist is racist! And egocentric. Dear fellow Americans: get out, travel and experience other cultures for Pete's sake!

Posted at 1:25PM on Jan 6th 2010 by yettawa

No you are wrong. You don't hvae to get out and travel just to learn about other cultures.

13. Its hard for most Americans to get out and travel let alone find humor in anything...

I find humor in everything ,but this was NOT funny at all.
.
I think the Australian's need to find better humor

what's the difference??

This guy is very lucky! This commercial is so unrealistic! The colored's would have stabbed him for the bucket before the commercial was over. You really think they would let a white guy sit in the middle of em & eat a bucket of chicken without getting violent?

137. There must be a hell of a lot of people out there who are not aware of one of the worst stereotypes out there. God, the world is full of morons. Do you have to be over 35 with some semblance of cultural awareness to get something that hits you over the head with its stupidity? So reassuring to know that Australians are just as culturally obtuse.

"we hate you as much as you hate us and mexicans". By blackgurl

Really now? Way to project YOUR feelings on your entire race. My best friend for the last 25 yrs is black, so obviously she doesn't hate all whites. As I don't hate all blacks. But neither of us can stand ignorant, intolerant people.
Usually, people who hate, become hated.
