Kevin Smith

Southwest Thinks I'm Fat

2/14/2010 1:48 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

0214_kevin_smith_twitter-1Kevin Smith was thrown off a Southwest Airlines flight yesterday for being a "safety risk" -- a polite way of saying he was deemed too fat to fly.

Smith was flying from Oakland to Burbank and was, according to his own tweets, already seated and ready to go when a Southwest attendant named Suzanne "told me Captain Leysath deemed me a 'safety risk.'"

He flew into Oakland on a SW flight, and tweeted later
(along with the photo on the right) that he eventually flew out on one as well.

Smith also received a $100 voucher for his trouble and a few apologetic tweets from SWA, but based on the number of four-letter words used on Smith's Twitter page ... we don't think the apology was accepted.

UPDATE: Southwest responded to Silent Bobgate on their blog.

UPDATE 2
: The SW site seems to be down. Read the blog entry by clicking below.

2/13 Flight 2394, Oakland-Burbank:
Many of you reached out to Southwest Airlines via Twitter last night (2/13) and today (2/14) regarding a situation a Customer Twittered about that occurred on a Southwest flight. It is unusual for us to handle individual Customer concerns in so public a forum, but with so many people involved in and aware of the situation, you also should be involved in the solution. First and foremost, to Mr. Smith: we would like to echo our Tweets and again offer our heartfelt apologies to you. We are sincerely sorry for your travel experience on Southwest Airlines.

As soon as we saw the first Tweet from Mr. Smith, we contacted him personally to apologize for his experience and to address his concerns on both Twitter and with a personal phone call last night and another call this afternoon (2/14). Since the situation has received a lot of public attention, we'd like to take the opportunity to address a few of the specifics here as well.

Mr. Smith originally purchased two Southwest seats on a flight from Oakland to Burbank – as he's been known to do when traveling on Southwest. He decided to change his plans and board an earlier flight to Burbank, which technically means flying standby. As you may know, airlines are not able to clear standby passengers until all Customers are boarded. When the time came to board Mr. Smith, we had only a single seat available for him to occupy. Our pilots are responsible for the Safety and comfort of all Customers on the aircraft and therefore, made the determination that Mr. Smith needed more than one seat to complete his flight. Our Employees explained why the decision was made, accommodated Mr. Smith on a later flight, and issued him a $100 Southwest travel voucher for his inconvenience.

You've read about these situations before. Southwest instituted our Customer of Size policy more than 25 years ago. The policy requires passengers who cannot fit safely and comfortably in one seat to purchase an additional seat while traveling. This policy is not unique to Southwest Airlines and it is not a revenue generator. Most, if not all, carriers have similar policies, but unique to Southwest is the refunding of the second seat purchased (if the flight does not oversell) which is greater than any revenue made (policy is available at www.southwest.com). The spirit of this policy is based solely on Customer comfort and Safety. As a Company committed to serving our Customers in Safety and comfort, we feel the definitive boundary between seats is the armrest. If a Customer cannot comfortably lower the armrest and infringes on a portion of another seat, a Customer seated adjacent would be very uncomfortable and a timely exit from the aircraft in the event of an emergency might be compromised if we allow a cramped, restricted seating arrangement.

Why do businesses have to spend money to widen their seats, which means there are fewer available seats in the plane, which means airfares go up for everyone, just because you're a fat ass? I don't want to have to pay extra just because you're fat. You should pay more and get an extra seat to accommodate your ass. Stop shoving food in your mouth and exercise. If you can afford all that food, you can afford an extra seat.

Which is more sad? Him being a millionaire, or you sitting on the internet complaining about his movies not making money while broke in a basement? I vote the later, and for the record if you are angry and posting try hitting all the keys with your fat fingers its "his" not "is". Also try using non passive aggressive periods so much, we get it you can type several in a row, but now try using the proper ones.....

Poor Sophia.... I am so sorry that you got dumped and the girl that replaced you was a BBW. See us BBW's have no problem being ourselves and enjoying our time with our men. Most men do like us and appreciate us and our curves in bed. So keep sticking your finger down your throat or doing your drugs to keep yourself looking thin and we will keep your men warm and satisfied at night

There is a relationship between high altitude and stroke and heart attack. They just didn't want you to die on their plane. I also want to complain about the seats going back into the other persons space, you know you hate it so why do you do it to others?

What if you are a family of three "normal, acceptable" sized people and one "overweight, unacceptable" sized person? Do they all bear the embarassment and humilation of getting thrown off the plane?

The Obama's will be delighted with this - they want to ostracize overweight children even more than they are now!

I smell a movie idea coming our way!! Oh, wait! I'm confusing him with Michael Moore...I was thinking, "Fat in America" or something like that! That wouldn't work for KS. Maybe "Kevin Does Southwest Dirty" or something!!
I do Love that Kevin Smith though! Didn't like what he said about "Jersey Girl" though!

I recently had an isle seat res. on US Airways. As I approached it there was a mother and her teen daughter covering 1/2 of my seat. Told attendant I couldn't sit there. She suggested I ask her to fasten her belt. No way in Hell was I going there. For one I am a man and she was a different race. I'm not racist but, you know how the world would percieve. The attendant asked her to buckle up. She needed 2 seatbelt extensions. Nothing changed. If there hadn't of been 1 seat left on the flight I don't know what would have taken place from there. Go figure. The women was very calm about the whole thing knowing what occured. Never said a word outside of,"I need another extension."
I don't think the overweight issue is ever going in a positive direction. We all know there is more and more time put into making our lives occupied w/ basically, less physical movement involved. It's that simple. There is no discussion as to what to do about it. We are as a whole nation enabling this situation. We are all to blame. What are you going to do about instead of complain?
A few facts: Hospitals are spending millions on remodeling to accomodate for it. Only 3% of us have a metabolism issue, and most of are Native American that are from desert regions like the Pima tribe that typically ate what there was for umteen yrs. Roots, seeds, cactus and their fruit, etc. Now by the time they are 14, 83% are affected by diabetes.

I want to clarify something here: I work for Southwest, and our policy is not to remove "fatties" off the plane... If you are too big to fit in the seat WITH THE ARMRESTS DOWN, you will be asked to buy an additional seat. If the plane goes out with any open seats, you will be reimbursed the cost of the second seat. If not, the second seat is only $75, not full fare. This is for the safety and comfort of the other passengers who shouldn't have to share a portion of their seat! To be removed from the plane, Mr. Smith must have done something to warrant such actions. NOT because he is fat.

Instead of some of you getting upset at your neighbor for being too big for the seat, how about getting upset at SouthWest for making seats so small and cramming them up together.

Take a deep breath and think about your family members who are too big for those seats. Fuss at the airline. They have taken your right to being luggage, taken away your water, and your snacks, will not give you a blanket, and keep shoving more seats in and making them smaller. Americans are a large group, how insane for a airline to keep making the seats smaller and pushing them closer together.
