Corey Dillon -- The Soy Sauce Defense

A source close to retired NFL star Corey Dillon tells TMZ the ex-running back is adamant that he didn't lay a hand on his wife last night -- but he may have splashed her with soy sauce.

As TMZ first reported, Dillon was arrested for felony spousal abuse at his home in Calabasas last night after his wife, Desiree Dillon, called 911 claiming she had been assaulted.

Our source says Corey admits that he and his wife -- who filed for divorce last month -- were having a heated verbal argument during dinner when they began "throwing water and soy sauce" at each other ... but Corey vehemently denies that he roughed up Desiree.

Corey was eventually released on $50,000 bail.

UPDATE: TMZ spoke with Desiree, who told us there was a heated incident between the two of them -- but stressed that Corey never hit her.

As for why she called police, Desiree says she needed help to "defuse the situation."

In the state of California (L.A County) , it is almost impossible to get a DV charge dropped. Even if the the supposed victim recants their police statements (battered wife syndrome). The DA goes for the jugular on these cases. Even with the best attorneys, he will get it lessened to a mis at best. The DA's office gets federal money for prosecuting these cases. On second thought, i recant my opinion because calabasas is not Los Angeles County. He will be fine. Community labor and a fine. "im a lawyer".

I am so sick and tired of hearing about how on the “say so” of some disgruntle vindictive bitch a black man has to lose his ****ing freedom. If he did hit her…lock his azz up but if you call the law (and we all know how the law is trigger happy when it comes to brothers) and there is no evidence of abuse …than your azz should get locked up.

this whole calling the police is bull crap, its getting completley out of control. My ex wife called the cops the other day becasue I was at home and she didnt want me there. they told her i had as much right to be there as she did and left, but what if I had thrown soy sauce at her. Assualt with a deadly weapon? We all now how bad salt can be for you.
