Chris Klein's DUI -- Jail Time On the Line

6/16/2010 11:20 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Chris Klein could be headed to the slammer in the wake of this morning's DUI arrest -- all because the "American Pie" star has a history of driving drunk.

Chris Klein

Klein was arrested and convicted of DUI back in 2004 -- and because of that prior arrest, California law requires that he serve a minimum 4 days in jail if he's convicted of DUI again.

But that's not all -- there's a new law going into effect in July -- which would apply to Klein if he's found guilty after that date  -- that requires multiple DUI offenders to have an "ignition interlock system" installed in their vehicle if they wish to drive.

The system is essentially a breathalyzer test that's synced up to the car -- and if he ain't sober, the car won't start.

TMZ has also learned Klein wasn't alone when he was popped early this morning -- there was a dog in his car that a friend retrieved after he was busted.

he needs some prison time and some pork his butt time in the man showers. I think he wants someone to step on his testicles and then kick him in his balls. He said he likes that sort of thing.

Can we get one of those interlocks for the "milkaholic?"

Hopefully this will serve as wake up call. My family member (Matt Maher Story) killed another innocent driver because he thought he was invincible and made terrible decision to drink and drive. He is now in prison sharing his story to prevent further tragedies from occurring.

Good idea but kinda useless. No one has ever thought of having someone else blow into it!

Minimum 4 days in jail? What does that come out to in actual time? 30 seconds?

Make sure he gets the Judge from the Lohan case. He'll NEVER go to jail or even have to worry about it.

Those car tests might be easier to "fool" than a field breathalyzer test, because a police officer is not around. Probably still difficult though.

Looks like the trendy thing to do these days- be a celebrity, get a DUI wear a SCRAM anklet. Lindsay Lohan has one.

HeyHeyHey

4 days in jail??? HOLY CRAP!!! (Sarcasm) Is this really news? 4 days in jail is nothing. People that can't afford to post bail for their first DUI often spend up to a week in jail waiting for their to see the judge. He probably wont even serve it and if he does, its 4 freaking days. I just hope he gets help. I doubt jailtime will help his alcoholism. I dont think most drug addicts or alcoholics who go to jail get cured. They either find their fix in jail or relapse once they get out. There is no rehabalition aspect in jail. You spend your time watching one tv amongst 30 people thats always on the same channel or you end up playing cards. Its just boring.
