Reggie Bush -- I'm Forfeiting My Heisman Trophy

9/14/2010 6:00 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Reggie Bush is gonna have a lot of free space on his mantle -- because the disgraced former USC running back says he's decided to "forfeit" his 2005 Heisman Trophy.

Regiie Bush Heisman Trophy

Bush just released a statement through the New Orleans Saints in which he explains, "Each individual carries the legacy of the award and each one is entrusted with its good name ... It is for these reasons that I have made the difficult decision to forfeit my title as Heisman winner of 2005."

Bush added, "The persistent media speculation regarding allegations dating back to my years at USC has been both painful and distracting.  In no way should the storm around these allegations reflect in any way on the dignity of this award, nor on any other institutions or individuals.  Nor should it distract from outstanding performances and hard-earned achievements either in the past, present or future."

Just a few days ago, Reggie clamped up when we asked him about the Heisman controversy in New York.

FYI -- Bush is the first player to ever return the award.

Reggie's decision comes in the wake of a report that the Heisman committee was going to strip him of the title in the near future.

UPDATE: Bush is already addressing the issue on his Twitter page -- saying, "Now that this is behind me I look forward to the future and winning more awards and championships here in New Orleans! Who Dat!"

He did it because it will look better on his Wikipedia page that he voluntarily gave it back rather than have it stripped from him.

He is not disgraced. He was a kid, got bad advice from an agent! We love him in New Orleans. We are honored to have him a part of the Saints and a part of the city. We will always stand by Reggie Bush because we appreciate what he has done and continues to do for New Orleans and the Saints but besides all of that he's a good guy and a super bowl champion.

It is really easy to call him names and to say he is a fraud but those universities and pro teams know how to dangle things in front of these athletes that are putting their careers on the line. These young people really don't know if they will be a success, so finding a home for theie families and giving them money and perks is what they do to control them. He did wrong and is admitting it. He will continue to be a success but these organizations have used athletes since the beginning of time and that is where the hammer should really come down.
You Go Reggie I hope the best for you!!!

His "disgrace" has NOTHING to do with his ability. It has to do with integrity. He received things he should not have. It wasn't performance enhancing or something that caused him to be a better player. He is and was a GREAT player by natural ability. It a shame he made bad choices and its a bigger shame a new coaching staff and the next generation of USC players have to pay for his and the former staffs choices. THAT blows. I respect that he is giving it up because I would make them take it from me.

I personally think this is ridiculous. He DID NOT take performance enhancing drugs, He certainly is Not the FIRST NOR the LAST former/present USC football player to accept money, cars, hotel stays and a home from trustees and donors, a lot of the players have broken the rules, and if they deny it, they are liars! -Not just at USC, but many colleges around the country. Come on, everybody knows this, so why is the NCAA only singling out Reggie Bush and USC? Is it personal? Like I said, this is ridiculous. And for those of you who are still hating on him for something he did not do alone (also while he was pretty much still a minor with poor judgement). Get over it! None of you would have turned those gifts down. Reggie, You have something else that proves you deserved that heisman trophy, actually it means more than the heisman. A SUPER BOWL RING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rules are rules, but it is a huge shame that a young kid (at the time) who didn't know Sh*t from shinola ends up paying several years later for a dumb choice, aided I'm sure by many heavy pressuring adults with lots of $$.

As far as OJ and his Heisman goes, his crimes had nothing to do with football. S***bag to the 10th degree no doubt, but one has nothing to do with the other.

One could spend six months researching crimes of black players in collegiate and professional sports who have been charged/ convicted with numerous crimes such as, Murder, DWI/w bodily injury, Illegal drug possession , rape, domestic violence, assault and battery, strong arm robbery, kidnapping and now the loss of the Heisman Trophy.

No more Heisman?

Big whoop. Getting your trophy taken away over a technicality doesn't change the fact that you were a great player. It's not like Bush was roiding it up or something. He just accepted a few bonuses, and if you think he's the only player doing that, then lol.

All the big football schools do it. USC and Reggie were just one of the few to get caught and are being made an example of.

If there was a pro football team in LA like in other cities to divert people's attention, I can guarantee that this would have gone on for years.

Heisman has been a joke for about the last 20 years. There's only one way to restore any credibility to the heisman and that would be to rescind the awarding of 'best player' from a whole list of marginal players who won based on hype and not performance.

As for the technicality, NCAA and CFA in the major sports (football and basketball) have been about payola and gifts for the last 30 years. 18 year old superstars driving fancy lease vehicles provided to them surreptitiously by alumni associations is the norm.

With the recent events in College football you have a whole host of players currently not playing do to agent/athlete interaction. Consider you have Chancellors and Presidents trying to milk every dime out of these programs (conference changes, tv contracts, and relaxed eligibility rules).

Much like the IOC (olympic) committee, NCAA and CFA are going to forced to allow fee for play. The olympics for many years was the epitome of Amateur athletics, but now it's nothing but a corporate controlled advertising organization with millionaire athletes (swimmers, figure skaters, track and field, baseball, soccer, basketball, etc) who are for all intents and purposes - are Professionals.

Pay the players or let them go pro, What else is there to say?

Big deal returning the Heisman which was going to be taken away anyway. It does not undo all the harm he did to USC which will be barred from bowl game for years. It will affect USC football players for years to come. Nothing Reggie Bush does now will undo the shame he brought upon himself.
