Report:

Methadone Found in

Andy Irons' Hotel Room

11/3/2010 11:56 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Surf legend Andy Irons reportedly had "numerous" medications in his Dallas, TX hotel room in the wake of his death -- including methadone.

According to Hawaii's Star Advertiser newspaper -- the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office claims the methadone was found inside a container of a prescription drug called zolpidem (sleep aid)  ... which was on Andy's nightstand inside the hotel room.

An investigator with the Tarrant County M.E. tells TMZ they did not release any information about methadone to the Star Advertiser -- but we spoke to the reporter, who tells us someone at the M.E.'s office volunteered the info to him when he called. The reporter did not specify who he spoke to at the M.E.'s office.

As we previously reported, the 32-year-old surfing champ -- considered by many to be one of the best in the world -- was found dead yesterday at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Dallas.

Irons' family released a statement suggesting he may have been suffering from dengue fever ... though methadone is not typically used to treat that illness.

Correct midnight toker, this is a free country and you can say whatever you would like, that doesnt mean you should. people in America have lost respect for one another. we are all the same living on this earth and people try to classify others as druggies and low lifes or whatever else without ever speaking a word to them. no, i personally did not know him and what he was about but who am i to judge him based on it. would you like people talking about your family member in this manner the day after they pass?

Who cares about the possibility that there was methadone found in his room it does not lessen his passing. He was adored and loved by many and he will be missed regardless.

I understand that the way the report was written may be immoral, however, I do feel that the dangers of Methodone are very real. Obviously we have all read the reports about various celebrities who have used methodone, but what about the people in our own lives. I learned at a very young age that Methodone was not to be messed with when my friend father died of an accidental OD. In High School two of my class mates died from accidental Methodone overdoses. These kids were not drug addicts either, that's why it was so easy for them to make a fatal mistake. Saying that Andy had Methodone in his room is not saying he was a drug addict, to me it is a warning of how dangerous Methodone can be. Regardless, it is a very sad death, and my prayers go out to his family.

Pro surfing in a nutshell: travel the world, burn the locals on the best waves, sleep with
the hottest local girls, do as many drugs as possible, expose as many secret spots
as possible, and get rich promoting overpriced surf fashion.

Pro surfing has a lot to answer for. Anyone who thinks differently hasn't
been as close to the inside as I have.

RIP AI. The man has been an inspiration to me, along with most of the surfing community, for a long time. We'll never forget him and will surf with a heavy heart this week.

midnight toker: you're lame. the fact that you don't know who this man was or what he accomplished in his life makes you sound like the biggest moron on the planet, right next to that TD character. get a life.

Pro surfing in a nutshell: travel the world, **** as many local girls as possible, do as many drugs as possible, expose as many good local spots
as possible, make surfers that have real jobs as envious as possible.

Pro surfing has a lot to answer for. Anybody who thinks that pro surfers
aren't druggies hasn't been as close to the circuit as I have.

Hey TD, just curious. If being a 3 time world champion surfer is 'wasting your life away', then what do you call your waste of a so called human existence? You don't have the first clue of what you're talking about do you? A three time WORLD CHAMPION surfer, wasting his life away? A man who was just married a year ago, and has a baby on the way wasting his life away? Scooping up cash cause he likes to play in the water, haha! Funny thing is, with all that cash he still drove a 2000 Toyota Tundra when he could've been blowing it on Cadillac Escalades like those idiots in rap videos, but he didn't. Just because you've done nothing with your sad, sappy life doesn't mean you can sit here and rag on a man who is no longer on this earth to defend himself. I bet you wouldn't even have the balls to say it to his face if he were alive today. You'd probably still sit your fat ass behind that computer screen you're at right now and flap your gums about his life that you obviously know nothing about.
Also, I'd like to know...Have you ever had the Dangue Fever? Do you know how much pain is associated with it? I don't and neither do you, but I'm sure they don't call it the "Bonecrusher Fever" because it's a walk in the park. So maybe he needed the methadone to help cope with it. Get over yourself and your self-righteous additude. Get on with your pathetic little life, and get a job. Why are you on the computer at 10am anyways? Quit living off our taxes and get a job slack ass!

Methadone is used to treat severe pain which normally accompanies a viral illness to imply a drug problem is very poor reporting by TMZ. This man has passed away, please respect that fact and do some true investigating before posting such rubbish.

Methadone is commonly use d for pain management. My mother uses it for extreme Osteoporosis...it's the only thing that helps her walk.

If he had a medical condition that called for this he may have combined them both in one bottle...not safe...but done frequently by people who travel.
