Robert Downey Jr. & Mel Gibson:

Double-Double Date

3/21/2011 3:25 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Robert Downey Jr. and Mel Gibson got together for a friendly celebrity power lunch yesterday, but it didn't go down at one of those super-expensive Hollywood joints -- they got burgers at In-N-Out ... TMZ has learned.

Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr.
The old friends found themselves out in Irvine, CA when the hunger pangs hit -- so they went to every West Coasters favorite fast food spot.

According to a witness, they each ordered a Double-Double combo meal and dined with a third person, non-celebrity. They were joined by a friend, who did the ordering for them.

BTW -- We know the pic is blurry, but we've confirmed  ... it's definitely them.

No word on why the two were in Irvine together, but we're told it definitely wasn't for a movie.

Sheriff’s Investigator Wanted Mel Gibson’s Ex Charged with Extortion
By Pandora Young on March 22, 2011 8:30 AM
The Sheriff’s Department detective who led the investigation into charges of extortion by Mel Gibson‘s ex-girlfriend is not happy that prosecutors rejected the case. Earlier this month, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office declined to charge Oksana Grigorieva, and the decision prompted Detective Rodney Wagner to fire off a letter voicing his objections. But prosecutors remain unmoved. From the LA Times:

A spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office, Jane Robison, … downplayed Wagner’s letter as “his opinion.”

“He’s not an attorney. Our attorneys reviewed the case and declined to file based on the evidence and the lack of evidence,” Robison said.

Grigorieva’s current attorney, Daniel Horowitz, said Wagner had mistaken bare-knuckles legal negotiations for a crime.

“Lawyering is a very tough business,” he said.

We aren’t lawyers or detectives, but we know that for plenty of people child support and alimony feels like extortion. That doesn’t mean it is.

And if Grigorieva did threaten to leak the tapes to get cash out of Mel Gibson, it’s a good thing it didn’t work. Not because it may or may not have been extortion, but because those recordings were so informative. The media has for too long turned a blind eye to racism and sexism among the Hollywood elite. Those tapes told us more about Gibson than a million celebrity profiles ever could.

leaks we were waiting for...more to come I hope.

Since it's half page, here's what investigator told LA Times & it explains what Harvey teased Horowitz for with her threat of Mel's ruination:

Lead detective in Mel Gibson case wanted Oksana Grigorieva charged with extortion
Comments (2) (2)(7)March 22, 2011 | 8:35 am

The lead detective in the Mel Gibson investigation turned up "implied threats" against the actor by his ex-girlfriend and believed that a demand by her attorneys for $20 million in exchange for damaging recordings and photos merited prosecution.

The letter from Det. Rodney Wagner of the Sheriff's Department to the prosecutor who declined to file charges alleges three separate instances of extortion in e-mails to Gibson from Oksana Grigorieva and in a March 2010 meeting in which her lawyers talked with Gibson's representatives about how disclosure of the tapes and photos would "ruin" his career.

"By discussing the potential damage to Mr. Gibson's career if the 'evidence' were to be released to the public … it was my opinion, that constituted an implied threat," Wagner wrote.

Eric George, who was Grigorieva's lead attorney in the negotiations, is the son of the state's former chief justice and a campaign fund-raiser for Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley. He hosted a $500-per-person ****tail party at his Beverly Hills home in August for Cooley's unsuccessful race for state attorney general and donated $6,500 to his campaign. He declined to comment.

A spokeswoman for the district attorney's office, Jane Robison, said Cooley had no role in determining whether to bring charges in the Gibson case and downplayed Wagner's letter as "his opinion."

"He's not an attorney. Our attorneys reviewed the case and declined to file based on the evidence and the lack of evidence," Robison said.

"Mr. Lynch stated that he believed Ms Grigorieva was in fact
TRYING TO GET MONEY from Mr. Gibson, however he was not sure if a jury would come to that same conclusion."

(..) Mr. Lynch believed Ms Grigorieva was in fact
TRYING TO GET MONEY from Mr. Gibson (..)

Didn't regular folks come to the same 'conclusion' last June/July :)
What is the Assistant DA paid for, I wonder ..
