Macho Man Randy Savage Dies In Car Accident

5/20/2011 3:00 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Macho Man Randy Savage -- one of the greatest wrestlers of all-time -- died today in a car accident in Seminole, Florida ... TMZ has learned.

Randy Savage Car Accident Dead

TMZ spoke with Randy's brother, Lanny Poffo, who tells us the wrestling legend suffered a heart attack while he was behind the wheel around 9:25 AM ... and lost control of his vehicle.

Earlier this month, Savage celebrated his 1-year anniversary with his new wife Lynn.

Savage was 58.

Macho Man began wrestling in the WWF in 1985 and became a superstar with his trademark catchphrase "Ooooooh Yeaahhhhh." Savage was so popular, he became the spokesperson for Slim Jim in the mid '90s ... and became virtually synonymous with the brand.

UPDATE: Florida Highway Patrol tells TMZ ... Savage was driving his 2009 Jeep Wrangler when he veered across a concrete median ... through oncoming traffic ... and "collided head-on with a tree."

Savage was transported to Largo Medical center, where he died from his injuries.

Savage's wife was a passenger in the vehicle during the collision -- but survived with "minor injuries." She was transported to a different local hospital where she was treated.

According to officials, Randy and Lynn were both wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Cops say alcohol was NOT a factor.

An investigation into the accident is underway.

I hate to see people making bad one-liners when someone dies. Love the person or hate them, Randy Savage gave his life to make people in the world smile. He spent his entire life, doing that for you and everyone else in this world. How many people are out there doing that, I ask you? Giving everything you have inside you, your time and energy, giving up holidays with your families to give happiness to a complete stranger. This is what this man did. Throughout his entire life, this man wanted to share what he could to entertain the masses, to make people feel good. If even a fraction of the people in this world spent their lives living for others instead of themselves, this world would be a much better place for us all. Think about that before you write your ignorant jokes about slim jims and roid rage. Have some respect for the dead, and acknowledge the great things people like him devote their lives to.

Great Entertainer, electric personality. My oldest son loved to go around the house imatating Randy. He would say ohhhhh yeah I'm the Macho Man, jumping from the coach doing some kind of tuck and roll. This is a very sad moment in time. We have lost so many of our great wrestlers in the last few years. Randy and all of them (Owen heart, Rick Rude, Davey Boy Smith, Curt Henning, Eddy Guerrero, also including Miss Elizabeth, and several others)will be greatly missed. My prayers go out to family, friends, and fans.Goodbye Macho Man, may you find peace whereever you have gone.

With Sincere Sympathy,
Frankie J Day
