Dr. Drew -- Conaway Did NOT Die From an Overdose

5/27/2011 2:00 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Despite widespread reports, "Grease" star Jeff Conaway did NOT die from a drug overdose -- but rather his body gave out after long-term prescription drug abuse ... this according to Dr. Drew.

Drew -- who treated Conaway on "Celebrity Rehab" -- tells us there is no evidence showing Jeff died from an overdose ... saying, "This was aspiration with overwhelming pneumonia and sepsis."

Drew tells us Jeff's condition was inevitable because the actor had been a serious pill popper for years and the constant substance abuse wore down his body.

Drew explains, "Jeff is another pharmaceutical death from the overutilization of prescription drugs. Please continue to pray for friends and family. They appreciate your support.”

Dr Drew was asked by Jeff's family to be the spokesman during Jeff's stay in the hospital. YOu may not like that Dr Drew has his show about addicts. But he does keep up with a lot of his patients, famous, infamous, and not known at all.

Jeff had a terrible fall a while back ago causing breaks and fractures in mulitple parts of his body. His body gave out, in spirit, physically, and mentally. He tried is so many ways. Yes I knew him.

Did Dr. Drew conduct his autopsy? Was he the attending physician or the intensifist? Or perhaps his addiction to attention qualifies him to speak on Jeff Conaway's behalf. Dr. Drew would benefit from reviewing patient privacy law. Rest in peace Jeff. You will be missed.

Addiction is a hard beast to beat. You can blame Drew if you choose, he goes into helping people knowing how hard addiction is and is happy for his few succeses and prepared to be judged if he has failed. Drew did not cause jeff's death, addiction did and I am happy Drew supported him the final years of his long battle and did try to help him.

Excellent for Dr. Drew to spell out the fact that he died of sepsis. This happens all too often, according to the Sepsis Alliance. Rest in peace, Jeff Conaway.

My prayers go out to Jeff's family and friends, addiction is terrible. I am so sorry for your loss. Also I hope Celebrity Rehab never is on television again. It is not what fighting addiction is about.

So if Dr. Drew says it his condition was inevitable, why did he sign him up for celebrity rehab? He says he did not die from an overdose. Was he his doctor as well? He just doesnt want to look bad after a string of celebrities have gone on his show and are still using drugs.

And how would you know this, Dr. Drew? Were you asked to perform the autopsy?

A life snuffed out because of bad choices, drugs and hangers on willing to give him whatever drug they could get their hands on. Such a shame.
