As a kid I thought the best part of the movie was when she blew up into a blueberry and they rolled her out of the room. When she burst I found it equally horrifying and satisfying.

I must admit, I never got around to seeing the movie, either. But it is on my to-do list. All I know about oompa loompas are that they must be orange because that's how they describe overly spray tanned white people.

Well, I guess if she had chewed typical sugarless gum for the movie, she would have spent too much time in the bathroom and probably almost as much time at the dentist... Many non-sucrose sweeteners used in gum have a laxative effect if used too much and also the microorganisms responsible for cavities can figure them out and thrive on them eventually.

Nowadays there's gum sweetened only with xylitol, which actually directly helps prevent cavities (not just because it substitutes for table sugar), and also humans have a much better tolerance for it than some of the other sweeteners like sorbitol. So you can eat a lot of it without extra trips to the bathroom - it can totally substitute for sucrose (table sugar) in baking etc. The little buggies in the mouth don't seem to be able to figure out how to metabolize xylitol even though it's not zero calorie for humans, and also it tends to neutralize mouth pH or make it slightly alkaline (unpleasant for the buggies). So a few grams of xylitol a day (equal to about 12 pieces of gum or mints) after food or drink actually makes your mouth a less friendly environment for the microorganisms responsible ultimately for cavities ("plaque" microbeasties), and when that population goes down - so does your risk of cavities and gum disease.

Some Europeans (especially Scandinavians) were already giving kids xylitol for dental health back when she was suffering for her art, but it took longer to reach this side of the pond. They apparently stumbled on it when looking for cane and beet sugar substitutes during shortages as a result of the war. Xylitol can be produced from tree bark, and they have a lot of trees in Scandinavia....

Odd for the staffer to say it's "un-American" to have not seen the film.

It was filmed in Europe and the author is British.

Who cares!? Willy Wonka was a stupid ass gay movie. The idiots in the TMZ office are morons for blowing it out of proportion!!! DUMBASSES!!! The blonde chick & the brunette chick who sits next to her are reaaallly annoying, they should be fired. Hire people who are actually entertaining, instead of hiring annoying ****s who just complain all the time. Hire more people like MAX!

Never saw the movie either. Read and loved the book - when the movie came out, it just looked watered down and phony. The book's about Charlie, not the pedophile candy king, and the film just looked like it'd be awful.
