'X Factor' to Cheryl Cole: For Money, Not Love

6/5/2011 5:30 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Sources at "X Factor" tell TMZ ... FOX and Fremantle (the producers of the show) are trying to get Cheryl Cole back on the program, a week after giving her her walking papers ... but it's more about the bottom line than about loving Cheryl.

Our sources say when producers told Cheryl she wasnt right for the U.S. version of "X Factor," they tried to put her on the UK version of the show. Cheryl's managers wanted £2.5 million and producers thought it was too much, so the deal went south.

We're told Cheryl was due to get paid around $1.5 million for the U.S. show -- about what Paula Abdul and LA Reid are making -- but she has not decided whether to accept and come back.

The whole situation becomes even messier when you take into account Nicole Scherzinger -- who was originally hired as a host, but was moved to being a judge when Cheryl was axed. Her position on the show now seems to be up in the air.

Our sources say Cheryl's deal with the U.S version is "pay or play" -- meaning she gets paid whether she does the show or not. We're told execs at FOX -- and especially at Fremantle -- dont want to lose the money ... so it's better to have her on the show than not.

Again, how many of the same shows can you have?

How many of the 'winners' are actually still known and their records being bought?

@ Janet

The UK X-Factor has had 7 seasons of which the winners sign up to Simon Cowell's record label Syco or is it Simco Ltd...one of them.

The winners are Steve Brookestein, Leon Jackson, Shayne Ward, Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke, Joe Mcelderry and Matt Cardle so far.

Out of the 7 winners, so far 4 (Steve, Leon, Shayne and Joe) have been dropped by Simon Cowell's record label. In short, the show 57% of the time does not find a person with the X-Factor. It is simply a machine Simon Cowell uses to fill his pockets. In fact, you have a better chance at having a career if you come second on this show and get signed by a different record label than Simon's label.

To be blunt, Simon Cowell is good at marketing and PR but knows nothing about Music and the industry.

I say it was a huge mistake to drop her. She comes across as sweet and knows what she is talking about. She maybe unknown to most Americans but she is part of one of the most successful groups from the UK in the last 20 years and as an American I can say I love watching her and have no problem understanding her. Simon needs to stand up and talk to his friend Cheryl face to face and make it right.

joey _ I love TMZ 'til ya piss me off!

This is Cherly Tweedy, now Cole.
Look what she did to the bathroom attendant. I think she should take Chyna's place is the wrestling ring.

The thing about Fox being worried about losing Cheryl's $2 million salary is ridiculous. Fox and Fremantle both lose that sort of money and more on failed pilots and development deals all the time. They would have paid her and said good riddance if Fox really wanted her gone.

Why do you expect us to believe this crap, TMZ? Seriously. Just call Fox, Simon Cowell and Fremantle on pulling a weak stunt and call it a day.

to ANONYMOUS COOL --- Using your math 43 % remains which if you knew what you're talking about you would know is unbelievably successful. The music business is extremely tough and hard to predict, even groups that were successful 3 years ago get dropped in a second, it's all about what have you done for me lately. The other thing is the x-factor is based in the UK and even though we like to believe that the sun rises and shines only in the US there are alot of acts that never make the transition to our market, sometimes for no apparent reason. Look at the success of Take Take, Girls Aloud, Sugababes, Duffy and Amy Winehouse.

@ Drew

Did Simon pay you to write that??

Look, Syco produces the records, Syco is owned by Simon Cowell, the show is called X-Factor and the basis of the show is to find someone with the X-Factor. A failure rate of 57% shows that the show is a farce. Amy Winehouse, Take that..etc did not audition for X-Factor, Steve, Leon, Shayne and Joe did. Steve, Leon, Shayne and Joe had their records produced by Syco. If Syco knew about music, their records would not have failed like they did.
