Peter Falk Dies

6/24/2011 10:35 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Peter Falk -- star of the TV show "Columbo" -- died last night ... TMZ has learned.

Peter Falk Dead
Falk -- who suffered from Alzheimer's disease -- was 83.

A rep for the family tells TMZ, "Peter Falk, 83-year-old Academy Award nominee and star of television series, 'Columbo', died peacefully at his Beverly Hills home in the evening of June 23, 2011."

The rep continued, "Peter Falk is survived by his wife, Shera, of 34 years and two daughters from a previous marriage."

In addition to "Columbo," Falk starred in "Princess Bride," "Brigadoon" and "The Great Race."

Peter's wife, Shera and daughter Catherine were locked in a legal battle in 2009 over the creation of a conservatorship for Peter and who would control it.  In the end, the judge appointed Shera conservator.

UPDATE: John Finnegan -- Falk's "Columbo" co-star -- tells TMZ, he fell literally FELL DOWN when heard the news ... “I have known Peter for over 60 years ...  He was like a brother for me, he kept the food on the table.  He was the best, great!"

So, in Massachusetts, there is a town called Athol - Athol, Massachusetts. Well, anyways, Peter Falk used to travel around doing stand up comedy back in the early 70's. When his tour stopped in Athol, Massachusetts, his sign read "Falk in Athol."

Not quite 3 years ago TMZ ran a "story" and showed pics of Mr. Falk struggling on the street outside his home. His daughter posted the following comment:

This is Catherine Falk, his daughter wanting to tell you that my father has entertained millions for over thirty years and deserves more respect then being smeared on your web site for personal gain and humiliation.. My father is an elder like all of your own fathers and with age comes dementia and other progressive diseases and we all need to show some humility and respect for the elder community.. making fun of people in times of sickness and vulnerability is a sad way to live and I can't believe for a second any viewer in their right mind feels that these pictures are fun or entertaining.. want to thank your viewers for their kind words of my father and for their shock of the amusement your company puts forth in humiliating others for personal and financial gain.. we all have one thing in common-we have a father and we have aging parents and my father deserves more respect then what has been portrayed of him to your amusement! THANK YOU TO THE VIEWERS COMMENTS for your support and positive comments about my dad, Be well

The Princess Bride is one of my favorite movies. Peter Falk as the loving, rumpled grandfather helped to make that movie magical. I feel like crying. His family is in my prayers.

The inimitable Peter Falk and his "By the way, there's just one more thing..." that inevitably drove his nemesis craaaaaazy. Good bye Peter and thanks for many, many years of great entertainment.
