Funk Group War

PISSED at Hall Of Fame Snub --

Beasties Ain't On Our Level!

12/8/2011 4:30 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Howard Scott from the band War
The guys from War are FUMING after being snubbed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this week -- telling TMZ the fact the Beastie Boys got in before them is some serious salt in the wound.

TMZ spoke with Howard Scott -- vocalist and a founding member of War -- who tells us he’s “shocked” the rappers were inducted before his band, saying, “We were cranking out gold records when they were still in diapers.”

Scott adds, "How could the Beastie Boys get in before us when they sampled War's music on their first album?! I'll eat their platinum records!"

The singer had been pretty hopeful his group would finally be inducted into the HOF this year ... and  says the disappointing news "felt like I was kicked in the back of my britches."

For the record -- War was founded back in 1969 ... and DOMINATED music with hits like Cisco Kid, Why Can't We Be Friends, Slippin' Into Darkness ... and of course, LOW RIDER!!!

Don't take it out on the Beastie Boys, take it out on the Hall of Fame. They are notorious for erratic, and downright terrible choices on who to include or not include.

I can see WAR is pissed because they funk with rock in early 70's Look at ABBA, they were inducted in 2010...I blame people who are not music industry for these snubs. Rush, Moody Blues for examples. I called it Rock n Roll Hall of Shame!

I'm a HUGE fan of War (grew up in the Bay Area) but The Beastie Boys are definitely deserving of the nomination and induction. Message to War: Sore losers are hard to like.

The Beasties Boys belong in the Hall of Fame as much as I do and I can't sing a lick. WAR should have been there. I still play their music today.

WAR is right! It's probably political. Most things are these days. Here is some of the wording for RRHF eligibility: "We shall consider factors such as an artist's musical influence on other artists, length and depth of career and the body of work, innovation and superiority in style and technique, but musical excellence shall be the essential qualification of induction."

On one hand I feel really sorry for all the people here who don't even seem to know who WAR is... But on the other hand I am totally envious that they'd get a chance to hear all that stuff for the very first time. Man, what could be better! Go on, check this out:

For starters, stop calling WAR a funk band. Although they do have elements of funk in their music, they combined all genres of music, including rock to create their OWN sound. To those who doubt their ROCK legitimacy, WAR was the last band to jam with ULTIMATE rocker, Jimi Hendrix, the night before he died. WAR has recorded albums with Eric Burdon, who is already in the R&RHOF with the Animals. WAR music has been sampled, covered, used in countless movies, commercials, video games and still they get passed over for induction by a band that samples one of WAR's song's 'Lowrider'. REALLY?! Everyone BUT the ORIGINAL artists of WAR get all kinds of recognition for WAR songs...Cheech & Chong, George Lopez and numerous music artists. All WAR gets is forgotten. With iconic songs like 'Why Can't We Be Friends?', an anthem for the world, 'The World Is A Ghetto' still resonates today,'LOWRIDER', everyone and their mama knows, 'Slippin' Into Darkness', inspired Bob Marley to write,'Get Up, Stand Up', 'Spill The Wine', yeah, bet you didn't know they sing that one, plus All Day Music, Cisco Kid and far too many more hits to list, as a WAR fan I can only feel a very small measure of the frustration that these talented artists must feel to be constantly overlooked by the R&RHOF. It's sad to not see WAR get inducted while they are still here to receive those honors. After all, none of us is getting any younger.

The Beastie Boys were more of a novelty act, being white during a time of hard core black rap. The were accepted as a band only because they were different and had a father who was a record executive, not because they were a great band. War, on the other hand, are filled with good musicians and song writers and still fill the venues they play at. Longevity still outlasts novelty.

WAR was the soundtrack to my life at one point. So were the beastie boys. Th depth, instrumention and total vibe of their music continues to be relevant even today. Take a listen to Deliver the Word, Gypsy Man, Me and Baby Brother... Beastie boys is really just silly rap.
