Whitney Houston

Family Divided Over Burial

2/14/2012 5:00 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

There is a rift in Whitney Houston's family over where she should be laid to restThere's a rift in Whitney Houston's family over where she should be laid to rest ... TMZ has learned.

Family sources tell us ... Dionne Warwick, Whitney's cousin, and Cissy Houston, Whitney's mom, both want the burial to take place in Atlanta. They believe Atlanta is the place Whitney enjoyed the most and had the fondest memories.

But the rest of the family wants Whitney buried in Newark -- where she was born, and subsequently discovered at a local Baptist church (below).

We're told Cissy's position is succinct: "Michael Jackson did not want to be buried in Neverland, and Whitney did not want to be buried in New Jersey."

We're told Cissy and Dionne caved, after other family members convinced them New Jersey is where the world will remember her most.

It's unclear why they think the world will remember Whitney more in Newark than ATL.

No offense New Jersey.

....TMZ----why would Michael Jackson have not wanted to be buried in New Jersey of all God forsaken places when Michael was born in Indiana???

You guys may want to readjust your headline quotes just a tad....Artofwar

Maybe look at Whitney will, or living will. She may have made arangments as to her preference. Plus, her daughter may have the legal authority to make that decision. She is over 18 afterall.

Michael Jackson Was A Pedo

Why would the world remember her for being from the nation's 2nd place toilet bowl, New Jersey? (Florida is obviously the first place winner of the USA's official toilet bowl)
I never even knew she was from New Jersey. Will Snooki and the her herpes friends be attending the service?

Jersey shore wrecked any nice thoughts about Jersey(booze and stupidity) She should have been laid to rest elsewhere but it is the family's decision.

Wow....TMZ in your never ending rush to get ahead of the story you once again botch it badly! Michael Jackson and New Jersey??? I think you may have meant Gary Indiana or Neverland, however, you certainly didn't mean New Jersey!

Most people let their wishes be known whether its in a will or verbally with people in their family who will be sure it's enforced. I can't imagine this not already be worked out by the time she was 25. If they're fighting over this, I shudder to think what else they'll find to fight about in the coming months.

Michael Jackson moved from Gary as a child so I could see him not wanting to be buried there. (I'm sure that's what Cissy either said or meant) As for Whitney I was surprised by the Atlanta thing because Whitney was not only born and raised there, but she lived there for most of her life moving to Atlanta in later years. Anyway, who knows if this is even true. There are too many trivial stories leaking from Whitney's camp so clearly someone needs money and might make up anything to get a buck from TMZ.

I don't believe this story for one minute. Everybody in this family knows what Cissy says goes. Always has, always will. This woman cannot visit her daughter's grave or entombment, place flowers on it, etc., if the grave is in Atlanta. I highly doubt her mother wanted her buried in Atlanta instead of being buried near her dad so Cissy could visit both their graves.

Seriously, wherever Cissy wants to bury her daughter... who the f*ck should tell her whether or not she's right?

I don't know which family member told her off, but, whoever it was, you have some mighty balls, my friend, telling a craving mother where she should put to rest her own baby.

Some mighty balls, I'm telling you...

Whitney's mom and her daughter should have the final say of where she will be buried. The rest of the family need to go sit down somewhere if they cant BE SUPPORTIVE of what the IMMEDIATE family wants. They dont need all of that drama!

uuuummmm doesn't the next of kin call the shots?! That would be her 18 year old Daughter to say where she gets buried.
