Whitney Houston

Off the Wagon ...

With the Help of Enablers

2/15/2012 11:45 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

0214_whitney_gsi_EX_01Whitney Houston was heavy into alcohol in the months before her death, and many of the people around her bent over backwards to accommodate her cravings for alcohol.

Sources who spent significant time with Whitney in the last few months tell us ... Whitney drank virtually every day leading up to her death.

We're told when she started shooting the movie "Sparkle" she was sober.  In fact, Whitney's voice, we're told, was "phenomenal" and she would boast to people, "My voice is back!"

But after principal shooting, when Whitney went into the studio to dub various lines, we're told she was off the wagon.

We're told Whitney's immediate family -- and Bobby Brown -- became "extremely upset" because they believed the singer's friends were more than happy to accommodate her drinking whims whenever she wanted, even though it was apparent she had lost control.

As TMZ first reported, Whitney's family says authorities told them ... she may have died from a reaction to prescription drugs and alcohol.   We know she drank alcohol shortly before her death, and we're told she typically took Xanax -- one of the drugs found in her room -- before a performance to calm her nerves, and she was scheduled to sing at Clive Davis' Grammy party.

Being a recovered alcoholic and drug addict, I can tell you that the enablers in Whitney's life can and should include Oprah Winfrey. After watching her extensive interview with Whitney in 2009, I immediately shot off an email to Oprah appalled by the absolute naivete that she displayed by the enabling of Whitney's untreated addictions. The first ill-advised tone of the show was how much of the discussion was indicting of Bobby Brown and the influence and 'cause' he had on Whitney's addiction. I know NO recovered addict that would point to the person who first made drugs available to them as having any responsibility for their own addiction. In fact, in recovery one of THE necessary steps to recovery clearly states that the addict must 'put out of their minds where others were wrong'. Recovery is strictly to be borne out of the responsibility we take for all aspects of our addictions. The overwhelming blame and consideration of Mr. Brown's role, was a mis-direction of focus - not to mention the subsequent exposure of Bobby's daughter to what ultimately is not his responsibility. Additionally, when Whitney acknowledged that she still drank, Oprah lacked the responsibility necessary to call Whitney on the outrageous behavior and only condoned it by simply noting that if it wasn't her drug of choice, it was somehow tolerable. It is not. Narcotics Anonymous makes clear the err that addicts make by not considering alcohol as a drug and the dangers that drinking cause the addict. So in the end of the love-fest and applause directed at Whitney for her unhealthy relationship and perception of what drug recovery is - Oprah not only performed a dis-service to Whitney, but to all the untreated addicts listening who were likely to embrace such an'unhealthy' perception of what recovery is. Shame on you Oprah for not knowing your limitations when addressing a life and death disease - and shame on you for being the highest profile enabler of all. You not only enabled Whitney's addiction with your ignorance, but enabled countless of viewers that were misled by that self-absorbed display.

Whitney could really still sing when she wasnt drunk or on drugs, that was made true by her last cd & upcoming movie Sparkle. But when she was on her stuff, she sounded like a wounded moose.

I will never believe she was a drinker or on prescription medication. I think she died of a broken heart. She was such a great singer. Hey girl, you go.

Whitney should have stuck to eating Mickey Fine Hamburgers instead of eating Mickey Fine Xanax. Btw when was the xanax baby due that Whitney was carrying???

Who the Hell cares already? She was a punchline while she was alive and, like Jackson and Winehouse, suddenly a "legend" now that she is dead. She was a horrible person in life (and yes I know this as a fact) and the world is no worse off without her. Good riddance!

MarkSFlorida: Thank you. I have been trying to say something like this but you said it better. So many posters here are blaming Brown for Houston's drug addiction, when you and I know it all starts within oneself.

Winfrey is just a sycophant.... She should probably check out the programs at Hazelden, the granddaddy of rehab centers in Minnesota. She would learn a lot about addiction and enabling behavior.

Very interest to see this woman in always every picture and I remember seeing her at award show after Whitney mentioned being clean. It's really about the circle you keep around you.

Although its hard for some to admit, Whitney VOLUNTARILY drank alcohol & took drugs, no one forced her to do it. Regardless of her personal problems, I can still respect & admire the gift she shared with us. Those who want to blame others for her death, are usually in the habit of blaming someone else for their own problems.

WH's personal and financial managers did a deplorable, irresponsible job. Given interest rates in the 1980s, forget the 1990s historic bull market, someone making the kind of money WH made back then, should never have had money problems — it's outrageous — and you have to wonder about affinity fraud and if it had anything to do with WH's substance abuse. This is so sad and sickening. A girl with a high school education, making sudden big money via entertainment, wouldn't have a clue how to monitor her managers, especially a family member such as her dear old dad.
This tragedy shouldn't have happened. Unfortunately, not every young, gifted money-maker is blessed with the prudent and honorable parents of a Valerie Bertinelli or a Claudia Schiffer, who reportedly did right by their children's blood, sweat and tears equity.

I don't know guys. I think possibly she may have had a heart attack in the tub. Yes, if your a severe alcoholic it will eventually kill you, and yes mixing pills with lets say xanax and cocain combo will kill you, but how does anyone know really until toxicology comes out. Maybe, it was her time. Any abuse on your body will certainly give in. Whitney Houston was a wonderful performer in her day. What a wonderful talent! I'm not quit so sure I want to throw her under the bus yet. Remember the voice!
