12:04 PM PST --
Gerard's manager, Alan Siegel tells TMZ, "Gerard left Betty Ford early this morning and he's healthy."

----------------------------------------------------------

Gerard Butler
is being treated for substance abuse at the Betty Ford Center ... TMZ has learned.

Butler's problems were triggered by the physical demands of shooting "300" in 2006 (see video below of Gerard preparing for the role). We're told the actor began struggling with pain management, and the problem became exacerbated while filming "Of Men and Mavericks," when Butler was badly hurt on December 18 during a surfing accident.

We're told Butler realized he was relying too much on prescription drugs and decided to head off a full-blown addiction by entering Betty Ford three weeks ago.

Sources tell TMZ ... Butler also developed issues with cocaine, but the root problem appears to be the injuries and pain management.

We're told Butler will be leaving Betty Ford later today.

WTf? Three weeks not even enough time to thoroughly detoxify. So, pain problem since 06' and just now "returned" in December doesn't sound like it went away. LOl, that last part of the story made me laugh, "Butler also developed issues with cocaine, but the root problem appears to be the injuries and pain management." Yeah right, call a spade a spade and be done with it!

Gerard,
Stay strong or get strong because you could be one of the best actors of our time. I think you are an amazing actor with increadible talent and that's hard to find. Such a rare talent. It would be a shame to waste. You have to get straight and keep it together for all or us who aren't so talented not by choice. For all or us who have the drive. Please keep it together. Doesn't waste your time. I was diagnosed with cancer last month and I have an 11 month old. I will have one hell of a year. When I think of you in hollywood with the the amount of many to do anything, I'm still trying to get through the day. Get it together. peace

When a celebrity checks into rehab it is reported with the same sense of urgency that a trip to the supermarket would be recounted. An old newspaper adage is the “Dog bites man is not a story, but ‘Man Bites Dog’ is a headline.” So it is with celebrities. It is as if the celebrity checking into rehab isn’t a story anymore when newspapers, websites or networks rely on a publicist “spin” as the primary source for their news stories.
At times it seems that the list of actors not in rehab is shorter than those who have undergone treatment. It has become fashionable. To the general public it must seem like a ‘rite of passage’ for the rich and famous. Not a week goes by that you don’t hear of some sports figure, politician, musician, actor, etc. “checking in” to the not-so exclusive club. Granted we build up celebrities, only to relish in their decline. Then followed by the tearful People magazine cover: “My horror that lead to Rehab.” The blush is off the rose, and the ‘news’ that say a Courtney Love entered rehab just doesn’t shock or startle anyone anymore.
My point is that instead of responsible reporting, the media glosses over the story. They minimize it when they say it was prescription drugs, as if to say since it is prescription drugs it okay or not as bad. Part of me wants to insert the word “only” before prescription drugs when I read the media coverage. How does one have “issues” with cocaine? I personally had an “issue” with alcohol and valium – I couldn’t drink it or use it 24/7 – that was my issue. When they relate the addiction to a specific incident such as the filming of “300”, it’s as if they are offering an excuse for his addiction. If someone goes to the length of admitting himself or herself to a rehab clinic to “head off full-blown addiction” guess what? You’re an addict! Normal people don’t check into rehab. They stop using because they recognize it was affecting them adversely. By underplaying the severity of the problem, the media only further instills in the public the sense of “its not that bad” or “no problem, I’ll just get treatment for 21 days and then I’ll be healthy just like Gerard Butler.”
The article should have read:
Gerard Butler Is An Addict: Realizing his life was spiraling out of control, actor Gerard Butler admitted himself into treatment at the Betty Ford Clinic. He acknowledged he has been abusing painkillers for the past six years. His drug habit, plus a dependency on cocaine, brought him to the place where he felt he had no other option than to choose treatment as opposed to the dangerous path he was headed down. Substance free after 21 days of detox and treatment, his manager issued the following statement: “Gerard faces a long and continuing battle to maintain sobriety. He hopes the stay at the Betty Ford clinic has provided him with some of the tools to deal with the day-to-day stresses of life and helped to build a foundation on which he can continue to grow in the future. Please wish him good luck on his journey.”
Addicts aren’t bad people. They are sick people. I was recently shocked to discover that my “gold standard” insurance covers no ‘in patient’ treatment, only “out patient” and it only covers 3 days of medical detox in a hospital during your lifetime. To most doctors an addict is someone who uses more than they do. Ask most people about an addict or alcoholic they know and they will say: “They are such a nice person” “They are so funny” “They are so talented” or “but she’s so pretty” usually followed by a shake of the head and a “sigh”. All of these comments are just indicative of the fundamental lack of understanding of the real problem. The media, the lawmakers, the insurance companies and the medical establishment have got to stop marginalizing the problem and place a priority on meaningful and sustained treatment options for the populous in order to really deal with the epidemic at hand. If these four institutions banded together what a monumental shift would occur in the acknowledgement of addiction and course of treatment. The media is a good place to start.
