Over Hitler Salute

6/13/2012 9:55 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

0613_richard_belzer_ramey_adlRichard Belzer's Nazi salute explanation isn't flying with a powerful Jewish group ... which claims the "Law & Order" star's actions were inappropriate, offensive and "not the least bit funny."

TMZ broke the story ... Belzer threw up the salute during a TV festival in Monte Carlo yesterday ... but insisted the gesture was not delivered in a "negative" way.

Belzer -- who described himself as a "Jewish comedian" -- said he was merely paying homage to the Charlie Chaplin movie "The Great Dictator" ... in which Charlie spoofed Hitler.

But the Anti-Defamation League isn't laughing ... in fact, ADL Director Abe Foxman -- a Holocaust survivor -- tells us, "Regardless of his explanation for his behavior, Richard Belzer’s imitation of Hitler was still inappropriate and offensive."

Foxman adds, "It’s not the least bit funny, but there’s no law against it.  Someone who is Jewish should know better and not disregard Jewish pain and tragedy just for the sake of a joke.”

The first amendment is no longer alive in this country. PETA, GLAD, and all of these organizations have taken care of it. was he wrong in doing this maybe but why do this people have to apologize for things they say or do.. right or wrong they can express what ever they which to express. aren't we free

He's always called himself a comedian but I've never seen him do any comedy. He is one of the most arrogant people in Hollywood. In the 80s he goaded Hulk Hogan into doing a wrestling move on him, then after he did it turned around and sued him for $5 million dollars. Heck of a guy!

Here is some classic Mel Brooks. You can't say this isn't funny, can you? There are plenty of seig heils here also.

Don't be ridiculous. Not everything is said to hurt a certain group of people. It's obvious this is not antisemetic.

People need to stop getting so upset and sensitive about stuff, especially when if you have any common sense you can see that it wasn't meant to offend anybody. People get offended way too easily these days... and people always need something to complain about

I think for a Jew to do the Hitler salute is the equivilant of a black person using the n-word. If you don't want other people to use it, don't use it yourself.
I'm Jewish and I never would do that, not as a joke, not ever. It's not appropriate. The ADL, like the NAACP can sometimes make a mountain out of a molehill, but in this case they are right. Good on them for not letting a jewish person get away with it just because they're jewish.

HA HA HA. I love it. I am glad to see that liberal tw@t called out. The whole idea of him thinking it is cool because he is Jewish is ridiculous.

Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where the guy converts to Judaism for the jokes.

When a comedian mocks Hitler and Nazis like that it makes them look ridiculous and destroys the image of power that many people are still attracted to, in their ignorance. I don't think Nazis should be taken lightly but I understand what he was doing, and as a comedian he should be given the respect to express himself. He is certainly not promoting Nazism.

I really don't get how people pay homage or praise a homicidal maniac. All the death and destruction that he caused. I bet if he or someone he knew that was near and dear to his heart. Like his parents, grandparents or siblings. Were in those death camps. would he think it was so funny. I didn't find the humor in Prince William wearing the Nazi type of uniform. Because if Hitler had crossed the English Channel he probably would not have been born. these guys need some serious history lessons.
