Jared Loughner
-- the guy who shot Rep. Gabrielle Giffords -- has changed his plea to "guilty" after last year's Tucson, AZ shooting, in which he killed 6 people and injured 13 more ... and has agreed to spend SEVEN life sentences in prison.

A plea of "not guilty" had previously been entered on Loughner's behalf -- but today, the judge ruled Loughner was competent to understand the gravity of the charges against him ... thanks to forcible treatment of his schizophrenia.

The shooting took place back on January 8, 2011. Loughner opened fire in a Safeway parking lot, where Rep. Giffords was holding a constituents meeting.

Loughner was originally charged with 49 criminal counts including first-degree murder. Today he pled guilty to 19 counts, including attempted assassination, 1st degree murder of 2 federal employees, and attempted murder of 2 federal employees. The remaining counts were dismissed.

The federal employees Loughner gunned down and killed were U.S. District Court judge John Roll and one of Giffords' staffers, Gabe Zimmerman.

Loughner's plea deal will allow him to avoid the death penalty, but he's agreed to serve seven life sentences in prison ... plus an additional 140 years.

Giffords, who was shot in the head, is slowly recovering. Shortly before Loughner entered his new plea today, Giffords released a statement, saying, "The pain and loss caused by the events of Jan. 8, 2011, are incalculable."

She added, "Avoiding a trial will allow us — and we hope the whole Southern Arizona community — to continue with our recovery."

Why did he plead guilty when at the time of the shooting he was clearly out of his mind and schizophrenic If he was in the bouts of an episode at the time of the crime then he clearly should not be held accountable in the same way a sane person would be. He should be locked away in a hospital.

The feelings around Tucson are mixed, but I think most are saying this is best. The victims are glad he is owning up to it, healing has begun and will continue. Many close were there that day, two coworker's family members were shot. I was going to go but drove the wrong direction as I went to do errands and then decided to heck with it.

I feel for Jared's parents and family so very much though, I feel for all the victims in this. I pray one day that there will be an easy avenue to get your loved ones help when they see that something is wrong.

Don't kid yourself, it is harder then heck to get them help. The city/gov officials say one thing, but when you are trying to find help there are so many obsticles. It is heart wrenching.

Finally, someone in this country takes responsibility for their actions. And it's this freak?

The Judge should not accept his guilty plea. This should be forced to trial. His mental competency at the time of the shooting has to be determined, or I think you might leave a gaping hole for a possible mistrial of sorts (not sure if plea bargains limit this like it does for appeals)...

I am so sick of them only mentioning Gabrielle Giffords when talking about this psycho. Other people were actually killed that day by this guy, but the only person the media can talk about is this woman who wasn't killed.

Sure, don't off the guy, put him in a temperature controlled cell where he has access to free food and water and a gym and a library and a lovely cushy schizophrenic life, on the taxpayer's dime. Welcome to liberal America.

That's probably what's going to happen in CO. Jerk will plead guilty if the insanity plea doesn't stick.
