Rosie O'Donnell

I Had a Secret Heart Attack

Last Week

8/20/2012 1:55 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
breaking news

0820_rosie-odonnell_TMZRosie O'Donnell suffered a major heart attack last week but kept it a secret ... until now, when she revealed the whole scary ordeal on her blog ... as a poem.

In a post on Rosie's official blog dated August 20 ... the comedian drops a bombshell with an entry titled "My Heart Attack" ... in which she explains how she went into cardiac arrest and didn't even realize it.

In the post she explains (in poem form) ... she experienced chest pains, clammy skin, and vomiting ... she then took an aspirin -- but never bothered to call 911.

The next day she went to see a cardiologist and was informed by her doctor that her symptoms were a result of a "widow maker" heart attack.

She says in the post, "50% of women having heart attacks never call 911 ... 200,000 women die of heart attacks every year in the US ... by some miracle I was not one of them."

She ends with a warning to other women saying, "Know the symptoms ladies ... listen to the voice inside ... CALL 911... save urself."

Fact: Heart disease kills more women than breast cancer.

The problem I have with this story is that Rosie has absolutely zero credibility. So I don't know if she's making this up so she can do the talk show circuit or if she is reporting a medically-validated heart attack.

Whatever the case may be, heart attacks in women ARE a serious issue. It is one of the leading causes of death in women and many doctors still don't believe that women even have heart attacks,

So if Rosie helps bring attention to the matter then I guess it doesn't matter if she's lying again or not.

I call bull****....the aspirin may have helped but if the heart attack was that big of a deal, she would have needed further treatment, pronto. Also, a cardiac arrest and a heart attack are not the same thing. If she went into cardiac arrest her heart would have stopped and she would have died.

Lots of harsh comments here, but let's remember Rosie is guilty of some nasty language herself.. On that note, I wonder what she would be saying tonight had it been the "Donald" who suffered the attack and not her???

A heart attack is not cardiac arrest. But, regardless- I'm glad she sought treatment and made it through this.

Rosie's blog never states anything about cardiac arrest. She did not go into cardiac arrest, or she would have become unresponsive and required emergency assistance. Your article is poorly written and does not present the facts accurately. If you're going to report something, do it right.

My problem is that she helped an "enormously big women!!!" She is not so small herself and neither am I. Thank you Rosie for helping another and maybe, we all should look at where we are physically and improve on it. No matter who we are! Coodos to you for helping a person in regular society - not the rich and wealthy only. I would help you or anyone else if need be.

Just a correction--cardiac arrest is NOT the same thing as a heart attack. An arrest means the heart stopped. If that were the case, ODonnell wouldn't have been conscious. She'd be dead.

Just wanted to clarify that her symptoms appear to have been for a heart attack. Her cardiologists probably ran blood work on her the next day and determined through enzymes present in a heart attack, she had suffered from one.

If this is an emergency, please hang up and dial 911. Obviously it was not that big of a deal since you took the time to Google "Female Heart Attack" and then decided to go to the doctor the next day. Seriously you expect us to believe that you are lucky to still be here? Dumb! Dumb! Dumb!
