AEG Drops $17.5 Mil

Insurance Claim

9/11/2012 7:25 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
breaking news

0911_mj_aeg_01
The concert promoter behind Michael Jackson's ill-fated "This Is It" tour has dropped its claim to collect on a $17.5 million insurance policy for the singer ... after the insurance company claimed AEG hid the extent of MJ's extensive drug and health issues.

AEG announced the move last night ... claiming the company has been contemplating the decision for months and it has nothing to do with the discovery of new emails that show AEG had doubts about MJ's health around the time the company applied for the insurance policy.

FYI -- the insurance company, Lloyds of London, had sued both AEG and Michael Jackson LLC in the wake of MJ's death to cancel out the policy. L.O.L. has claimed AEG and MJ were not forthright about the singer's drug addiction and failing health at the time they applied for the policy.

Now, a rep for Lloyds tells CNN ... "In exchange for AEG withdrawing its insurance claim, underwriters agreed to dismiss AEG from the case and to waive any costs recoverable from AEG."

Lloyds says it's NOT dropping the case against Michael Jackson LLC -- explaining they will press on seeking "rescission of the policy due to nondisclosures of Michael Jackson's prior drug use."

Jeffrey Scott "Jeff" Buckley (November 17, 1966 – May 29, 1997), raised as Scotty Moorhead,[1] was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. He was the son of Tim Buckley, also a musician. After a decade as a guitarist-for-hire in Los Angeles, Buckley amassed a following in the early 1990s by playing cover songs at venues in Manhattan's East Village, such as Sin-é, gradually focusing more on his own material. After rebuffing much interest from record labels[2] and his father's manager Herb Cohen,[3] he signed with Columbia, recruited a band, and recorded what would be his only studio album, Grace.
Over the following two years, the band toured widely to promote the album, including concerts in the U.S., Europe, Japan and Australia. In 1996, they stopped touring[4] and made sporadic attempts to record his second album in New York with Tom Verlaine as producer. In 1997, Buckley moved to Memphis, Tennessee, to resume work on the album, to be titled My Sweetheart the Drunk, recording many four-track demos while also playing weekly solo shows at a local venue. While awaiting the arrival of his band from New York, he drowned during a spontaneous evening swim — fully clothed — in the Wolf River, when he was caught in the wake of a passing boat. His body was found on June 4, 1997.[5]

Dr. Conrad Murray Tells Baby Mama He Could Be Out Of Jail By ChristmasDr. Conrad Murray Tells Baby Mama He Could Be Out Of Jail By Christmas 39 64

Dr. Conrad Murray, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the shocking death of pop superstar Michael Jackson, has told his baby mama, Nicole Alvarez, that he could be out of jail by Christmas, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.

"Dr. Murray has told his girlfriend/baby mama Nicole Alvarez that he could be out of jail by Christmas. Murray was sent to jail almost a year ago and was sentenced to four years in state prison. However, because of jail overcrowding, Murray has been serving his sentence at the county jail in Los Angeles and is expected to serve two years of the four year sentence," a source close to the situation tells us.

PHOTOS: Key Players In The Trial Of Dr. Conrad Murray

"Dr. Murray doesn't understand why he hasn't been released to finish the sentence at home with electronic monitoring, which he is eligible for, and has been pushing his legal team to pressure officials to get him released. Dr. Murray is absolutely miserable behind bars and has been getting increasingly frustrated with his lawyers for not getting him out of jail. He believes that he could be granted bail on yet another appeal that is being filed, or sent home to finish his sentence," the insider added.

As RadarOnline.com previously reported, Murray is passing time in jail by writing a tell-all book, and he hopes a publisher will pay him a substantial amount of money.

"Dr. Murray spends most of his days writing what he is telling friends will be a tell-all book about what really happened in the final days of Michael Jackson's life," a source previously told us. "Murray believes that the public will want to hear about the time he spent with Michael.

Conrad says that Michael confided his inner-most secrets about his true feelings for his family, the child molestation trial and his three children. Murray contends that Michael's kids viewed him as a family member and loved him.

"This is all about money for Murray though because he is absolutely flat broke and desperately needs the cash. He feels that the book could help rehab his image and help him to get his medical license back."

Reps for Murray have reached out to publishers to test the waters to see if there is any interest in releasing the book, and so far, the response has been, "no thanks."

The convicted felon "is hopeful that jail officials will do the right thing in his mind and release him around Christmas. Murray believes that would be the perfect time for him to be sent home to finish serving his sentence because it would be the holiday season and hopefully wouldn't make big news," the source told us.

Murray's attorney, Valerie Wass tells Radar, "Dr. Murray is tired of being in jail, and of course wants to be released. However, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department maintains that Dr. Murray isn't eligible for electronic monitoring."

Concert Giant Seeks Jermaine Jackson’s Book Drafts
First Published: September 12, 2012 4:49 PM EDT Credit: Getty Images
LOS ANGELES, Calif. --
Caption Jermaine Jackson promotes his memoir about late brother Michael Jackson, ‘You Are Not Alone,’ as he visits The Empire State Building in NYC on September 20, 2011Concert giant AEG Live is seeking book drafts and manuscripts by Jermaine Jackson that it claims may reveal details about his superstar brother that will help its defense in a lawsuit filed by the singers’ mother.

AEG is seeking drafts and manuscripts of Jackson’s recent book, “You Are Not Alone,” as well as an unpublished memoir it claims may focus on Michael Jackson’s alleged drug abuse.

Jermaine Jackson’s attorneys are fighting the request, calling them overly broad and in violation of the First Amendment, according to court filings. Turning over the writings also would violate the privacy of Michael Jackson’s three children and other family members and constitute a “fishing expedition,” according todo***ents filed Monday.

AEG’s attorneys contend the writings are important to its defense in a case filed by the singers’ mother claiming the concert promoter failed to properly supervise Conrad Murray, the physician convicted of involuntary manslaughter for Michael Jackson’s June 2009 death.

Their efforts seek drafts of a book described as “Legacy: Surviving the Best and the Worst,” which was reportedly in the works several years before the pop superstar’s death. AEG claims drafts of the work would show issues “of immense relevance to this case, including Michael Jackson’s rumored long-term abuse of prescription medication.”

AEG’s attorney Marvin Putnam wrote in an email that the company was seeking the do***ents because, during his book tour, Jermaine Jackson publicly touted the “details of his brother’s life and death.” Putnam also wrote that Jermaine Jackson claimed he was the “only person qualified to deliver the real Michael.”

The writings are not covered by protections afforded to investigative journalists since they are memoirs, AEG wrote in its motion to get a judge to order the release of the materials. A hearing is scheduled for Nov. 28.

Jermaine Jackson’s lawyer Kevin Boyle, who also represents his mother in the lawsuit against AEG, was not immediately available for comment.

AEG had promoted Michael Jackson’s comeback shows, titled “This Is It,” which were canceled after his unexpected death due to an overdose of a hospital anesthetic the singing had been given to help him sleep.

The company also is seeking to depose Jermaine Jackson. And it obtained a judge’s order Wednesday requiring Jackson’s longtime friend and dermatologist Dr. Arnold Klein to appear for a deposition next month.

Katherine Jackson sued AEG in September 2010, and the case is scheduled for trial in April 2013.

The company also is involved in a separate lawsuit filed by Lloyd’s of London over Michael Jackson’s life insurance policy. Putnam said the company has informed Lloyd’s that it has recouped its losses and is no longer pursuing the claim. Any proceeds should be paid to a company that benefits Michael Jackson’s estate, he said.

AEG’s formal withdrawal of the claim is expected soon, as well as its dismissal from the case filed by the insurer.

Janet Jackson Accused Of Delaying Michael's Funeral Over Money BattleJanet Jackson Accused Of Delaying Michael's Funeral Over Money Battle 6 2

Janet Jackson is being accused of delaying her brother Michael's funeral three years ago because she wanted a hefty deposit of $40k returned that she had put down, RadarOnline.com is reporting.

According to Vanity Fair, which obtained an excerpt of a new biography on the King of Pop, by Randall Sullivan: "Janet put up the $40,000 deposit at Forest Lawn to secure a spot for Michael but refused to let the funeral take place until the money was repaid."

PHOTOS: Michael Jackson’s Kids: Three Years After His Death

Jackson was finally buried nearly three months after he died.

The shocking book goes on to reveal that Michael's other sister, LaToya, descended onto his rental mansion in Holmby Hills following his death and retrieved trash bags full of cash!

PHOTOS: Michael Jackson Through The Years

"Grace Rwaramba [former nanny to MJ's kids] described Michael’s standard practice of hiding his cash in black plastic garbage bags and under the carpets. [The security guard] describes seeing La Toya and her boyfriend loading black plastic garbage bags into duffel bags and placing them in the garage. (La Toya would insist that nearly all of Michael’s money was gone by the time she arrived at the Holmby Hills house)," Vanity Fair reports the book alleges.

Meanwhile, according to the report, the next morning, Janet arrived with a moving van and demanded to be admitted to the house. A few hours later, the truck exited through the front gate with Jeffre Phillips at the wheel. Katherine Jackson and her daughters made it clear that they wouldn’t be leaving anytime soon. “They camped out for most of a week,” Sullivan relates, leaving and returning “whenever they felt like it.”

Dr. Conrad Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in relation to Jackson's death and was sentenced to four years in state prison.

However, because of overcrowding in California correctional facilities, Murray is serving his sentence in county jail and is expected to serve only half of the full sentence.

Michael Jackson’s Burial Was Delayed Because Janet Wanted Her Burial-Plot Deposit Back

By Vanity Fair7:14 PM, October 4 2012
Comment (13) EMail FOR:The Magazine

Michael Jackson’s burial was delayed for nearly three months due to wrangling between Janet Jackson and her brother’s estate, a detail revealed in a November Vanity Fair–exclusive excerpt of Untouchable, Randall Sullivan’s Michael Jackson biography, which will be published next month. According to Sullivan, Janet put up the $40,000 deposit at Forest Lawn to secure a spot for Michael but refused to let the funeral take place until the money was repaid.
Ronald Williams, of Talon Executive Services—a private-security company that dispatched a team to Michael Jackson’s rented château in Holmby Hills on the night of his death—tells Sullivan that hours after Jackson died, La Toya and her boyfriend, Jeffre Phillips, arrived at the house demanding to be admitted. “We’re family and we should have access to the house,” they reportedly said.
Sullivan reports that mother Katherine Jackson also arrived that night and entered the house, where she telephoned Grace Rwaramba, the recently terminated longtime nanny to Michael’s children. According to Rwaramba, Katherine said, “Grace, the children are crying. They are asking about you. They can’t believe that their father died. Grace, you remember Michael used to hide cash at the house? I’m here. Where can it be?” Rwaramba described Michael’s standard practice of hiding his cash in black plastic garbage bags and under the carpets. Talon describes seeing La Toya and her boyfriend loading black plastic garbage bags into duffel bags and placing them in the garage. (La Toya would insist that nearly all of Michael’s money was gone by the time she arrived at the Holmby Hills house.)
The next morning, Janet Jackson arrived with a moving van and demanded to be admitted. A few hours later, the truck exited through the front gate with Jeffre Phillips at the wheel. Katherine Jackson and her daughters made it clear that they wouldn’t be leaving anytime soon. “They camped out for most of a week,” Williams tells Sullivan, leaving and returning “whenever they felt like it.”
Katherine Jackson’s representatives shared details of her recent “abduction” with Sullivan, who describes what happened from her perspective for the first time. One of Katherine Jackson’s representatives tells Sullivan that it was Janet Jackson who on July 14, 2012, arranged for Dr. Allen Metzger to go to the Calabasas mansion, where her mother had been living with Michael’s three children. Metzger was introduced as an associate of Mrs. Jackson’s longtime Beverly Hills physician and told that her doctor wanted her to have a physical before she went to Albuquerque for her sons’ Unity Tour. After a brief examination, Metzger told Katherine Jackson that her blood pressure was elevated and that it would be best for her not to make the trip to New Mexico by car as she had planned. Katherine left the next morning with her daughter Rebbie and her granddaughter Stacee Brown and Mrs. Jackson’s personal assistant. It wasn’t until they arrived at the airport that Katherine realized they weren’t headed to Albuquerque but rather to Tucson, where she was booked at the Miraval Resort & Spa. Janet Jackson was there when she arrived.
The representative tells Sullivan that Dr. Metzger had no association with Mrs. Jackson’s physician and that she had not sent him to see Mrs. Jackson. Dr. Metzger was, in fact, the same doctor who had been called as a defense witness at the trial of Conrad Murray, the physician convicted of providing the drugs that killed Michael Jackson. He had also been reprimanded by the state medical board for writing prescriptions for Janet Jackson under false or fictitious names.
Katherine’s grandson T. J. Jackson, and others who were looking after Michael’s children at his Calabasas home, soon deduced that the five Jackson siblings—who that same week had sent a letter to Michael’s executors asking them to resign and claiming that their mother had suffered a mini-stroke—now reportedly with Katherine in their custody were, in the view of Mrs. Jackson’s representatives, attempting to gain a conservatorship over her, possibly by demonstrating her incompetence to serve as guardian of Michael’s children. They hoped to gain control of their brother’s fortune, which would follow Prince, Paris, and Blanket wherever they went.
Sullivan explores the question of how John Branca, a lawyer who was fired by Michael Jackson in 2003—and is now earning tens of millions of dollars as an executor of the Michael Jackson estate—managed to retain possession of a will he should have handed over with all of Jackson’s papers to a new attorney, David LeGrand, who turned the do***ents over to another attorney, Brian Oxman, when he was dismissed. “I had access to every file and I had to go through them,” Oxman recalls. “And I did. There was no will. There was no trust. It just showed up after he died.” (Branca, through his attorney, declined to comment.)

John Branca, has said that the will he presented to the Jacksons in July 2009 was greeted by the family with applause, but Katherine Jackson remembers the meeting differently. “According to her, the atmosphere went from quiet to glum,” Sullivan reports. “She personally was offended that John Branca never once said how sorry he was for her loss. The man was cold, Mrs. Jackson thought, just as Michael had described him: ‘My son had told me and the kids that he never wanted Branca to be any part of his business ever again.’”
