Ben Affleck

Heads to Capitol Hill --

The Congo Needs Our Help!

12/19/2012 8:30 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Ben Affleck -- famous actor, director and screenwriter -- is now adding congressional testifier to his resume ... 'cause the "Argo" star just hit Capitol Hill to ask for U.S. intervention in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Affleck addressed the House Armed Services Committee on the security situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo this morning, claiming militant rebel groups have destabilized the country for long enough ... and it's time the U.S. put an end to the violence once and for all.

Why is Affleck qualified to talk about the Congo problems? Well, he happens to be the founder of the Eastern Congo Initiative, a humanitarian group that provides funding for local leaders and organizations in the eastern Congo.

Fancy that.

Though I respect his work, he is just reading off a script. In general, I am extremely disappointed and surprised that no actor step up and take on issues here in the US. Poverty, school funding, violence, and many other issues could be assisted by these "stars" fundraising efforts. They probably feel that the US government, and Obama, can handle it, but the fact is our country is broke and so are many of the programs that help out our poor. I'm not a bleeding liberal, but think there are issues in this country, that support their lifestyles and movies, that should be addressed.

I'm assuming there will be a request for money somewhere in that speech ... like we can afford
to do that. Use your own duckets, Mr. Affleck.
We're all tapped out ....

For Lord's sake - can we start with the United States? Can we all get on board with taking care
of what's needed here before the entire world?
We need to fix ourselves first or we won't be able
to fix anyone.

American short attention span at it's best. He was a bad investment in Hollywood because when people knew he was in the movie, they wouldnt go. He was taken out of previews for a movie for that reason. Remember Hollywoodland? No one does. Now he's a famous actor, director and screenwriter? Must be a new publicist. Actors should stay out of world politics but still havent gotten the message.

Wow, all the negative comments here about how he doesn't do anything for our country are pathetic. Does anyone commenting have firsthand knowledge that Ben and Jennifer don't support any local humanitarian causes? Doubtful. I think it's wonderful that he is doing that, especially since he is a very busy man, and he took time out of his schedule to help others. He could be off doing what other celebs do, yaughting, shopping, etc. But he obviously is a great person and cares about others that are far less fortunate. Do any of you that are chastising him help the impoverished needy in our country? If so, then that's great, but there's still no need to be negative. If you don't, then you are a hypocrite, because even a couple of dollars here and there can help. There is a way to find out if donations go straight to the cause or if the money goes in some fat CEO's pocket. There's enough negativity around, why add to it by remarking about someone trying to help?

Hey Ben are you living in a dish. This country is broke, did you forget about the many staving Americans. You want to help the Congo, Africa etc. use your money and get your rich pals to pay.

I am so sick of these stars wanting to make it better for other countries when our children are being picked off by crazies. How about you use your star power and your money to make mental health available to AMERICANS so they can get the help they need. You just lost points with me Ben...even though you don't care, shame on you.

Oh no.......those "African Poor & Starving" are a SCAM. And why should anyone support AFRICA ?
They have GOLD, OIL, DIAMONDS and are one of the richest continents in the world. Charity begins at home.
