Judd Apatow

I Wrote Child Murder Jokes

YEARS AGO For 'This Is 40'

12/19/2012 10:50 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Judd Apatow meant no harm in his script for "This Is 40" when one of the characters jokingly plays a "murder game" with his kids.  Judd tells us, he wrote the script 2 years ago, long before the Connecticut tragedy.

The scene in question involves the Albert Brooks' character, who is broke and looking for ways to save money.  The character, Larry, prepares to spray his triplets with a hose and says, "Line up! Line up for murder!  Come on!  Who wants to be killed?"

One of the kids screams, "I do!"  Larry responds, "Okay, we're eliminating one, we're cheaper already," and then Larry sprays the child.

The next kid says, "Murder me!"  Larry responds, "Boom, dead.  You're dead," adding, "All right, the kids are murdered.  That will save us some money."

Judd tells us, the scene "is spoken by a sarcastic father kidding with his children.  In light of recent events, I understand if some people might make an unfortunate association or put it in a context in which it was not intended."

We've learned the scene is staying in the movie, which opens Friday.

My heart is broken for the families in Newtown and every parent that has ever had to bury their child but this is out of control. People write jokes, scripts, and lyrics months and years in advance that have nothing to do with anything other than a quick laugh. The release of "this is 40" was planned months ago. People need to understand that and stop looking for every little thing to keep this tragedy in the front of our minds. The images of those children running terrified for their lives from Sandy Hook elementary is not leaving us anytime soon.

Ok, so we're into the overly sensitive and way too easily offended phase of the blame game

I guess that's healthy

But lets not forget that this was a mental health tragedy

Movies, songs, video games or guns did not cause this

This was caused by a disturbed individual with mental and physiological disabilities
He was also very intelligent
If he didn't have access to guns he would have found another way with possibly worse results

This is f'ing sick, and a reason why crazies get ideas. To keep these lines in the movie is horrible, I'm ashamed of all of them

I don't blame Judd Apatow, everyone knows that movies take 6 months to years to get made. He is not trying to disrespect anyone.

It seems like there are people trying to make this tragedy about them--it's disgusting. And how could this ever be considered funny? Never was and isn't now.

Tmz you have been perpetuating negativity since this horrible tragedy happened by publishing these stories. Why don't you focus on honoring these victims instead of posting some useless crap about Kesha and whatnot. It's trivial in the grand scheme of it all. Take this crap off your site and have some respect.

that is not funny whether or not it happened before the tragedy in connecticut.

So now go back and take off the shelves any time someone talks about death, murder, drugs, sex, racism, you name it. This is basically just California ******GOTS.
Also, the entire TMZ newsroom loves to blow each other and the other half usually sniffs coke off of Harvey's penis which he injects with steriods just to get hard when he has to have sex with small children.

I love his movies, and sure this is bad timing but wanting to cut a scene from a movie, I'm sorry but no one is forcing anyone to go see the movie. At least he came out and talked about it before the movie came out!

Why did the studio rename and delay the release of that Neighborhood Watch movie after the Trayvon Martin shooting? That movie was also written years before a tragic incident. I'm not understanding why some tragedies get coddled and respected, yet others do not get that same treatment? Either movies should be sensitive to current events or not - which is it??

This is such a non story. This and the Kesha thing.. you guys are really reaching. Obviously the joke has nothing to do with school murders. Why are you treating everyone like idiots?
