Sues NFL

Over Brain Injuries

Junior Seau
's family has filed a lawsuit against the NFL over brain injuries the Chargers legend sustained during his career -- injuries they claim caused him to kill himself.

The family filed the wrongful death lawsuit today in San Diego, claiming the league willfully hid the truth about the dangers of repetitive blows to the head ... such as those regularly sustained by professional football players.

According to the lawsuit, Seau suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) from those hits -- a condition that his family claims drove him to suicide.

The Seau family is also suing NFL helmet manufacturer Riddell -- calling the helmets dangerous and claiming the company was "negligent in their design."

Seau died last May after shooting himself in the chest. He was 43.

The Seau lawsuit is just one of a reported 175 lawsuits filed against the NFL by players and their families over head injuries sustained during their careers.

After filing the lawsuit, the family released a statement, saying, "We know this lawsuit will not bring back Junior. But it will send a message that the NFL needs to care for its former players, acknowledge its decades of deception on the issue of head injuries and player safety, and make the game safer for future generations."

The NFL hasn't responded to the lawsuit -- but after it was revealed Seau had CTE, the league released a statement, saying, "The NFL ... is committed to supporting a wide range of independent medical and scientific research that will both address CTE and promote the long-term health and safety of athletes at all levels."

He played football for crying out loud. A brutal sport at times. Like to know how many times he was injured as a youth and his parent let him continue to play???

Money grab.

Junior would not approve of this, maybe some education but not a lawsuit, shame on you family, you should be helping the NFL to educate not sue them, remember all players enjoyed and still do playing the game and Junior knew what he was doing could risk injury be it fast or slow. RIP #55

I am a fan of his, but this is ridiculous. These guys risk life and limb KNOWING there is a chance of injury - ALL at a shot at the big show and the big bucks. WHO knows if football injuries had ANYTHING to do with his suicide? It's all speculation and theory at this point. His family should not be looking to profit off his death. If the family wants to "do something," and not just make money, start a head injury research foundation in his name or something. I think at this point, it's all about the mighty dollar and they are just trying to get a settlement.

This is a really sad case ...I really feel for the family... but realistically ...he was a grown man ...he played the game knowing the risk of head injuries.. and possible broken bones .. unfortunately the check he collected and cashed... was worth more than the risk...

And yet another victim's family wants to profit from the misfortune of their dead son. Greed is an ugly thing. Why weren't they so concerned when he was alive and getting bashed on the field. They were real happy then but now their cash cow is gone so they have to figure out another way to get free money. Shameful!!!

He made millions of dollars playing a sport that he loved. There are thousands of others who have retired from the sport and have no ill effects, have lived long healthy lives and continue on with jobs in the sports profession. That leads me to believe that there was something wrong with him before he ever made the pros. The family needs to look even farther back than just with the NFL. Personally, I hope the family doesn't get a cent from this lawsuit. I'm also sure they will find other ways to make money from his name.

Wow this is crap........pretty sure the NFL didn't force him to keep on playing through his condition, it was his call and he made it

give me a break.....these guys fully embrace the whole game....money, glory and all and know full well they are taking a pounding. Years later, they're debilitated and it's someone else's fault??? They would have been digging ditches if it wasn't for the NFL.
