LeVar Burton

'Django Unchained' Is

NOTHING Like 'Roots'

"Django Unchained" is NOT a movie that's based in reality ... and should NEVER be compared to real depictions of slavery like "Roots" ... so says LeVar Burton.

LeVar -- who played Kunta Kinte in the 1977 miniseries -- was in New York yesterday to participate in a PBS special about important TV programs ... when we asked him about comparisons between "Roots" and "Django."

"Here's what I want folks to understand," Burton said ... "'Django' is a fantasy, it's not history ... 'Roots' is history ... and that's the difference."

Side note -- Our photog couldn't have been LESS articulate in delivering the question ... and as a consequence, the entire newsroom banned together to shame and taunt him without mercy.

Roots was fiction too. Haley took parts of another book and mixed it with his so-called research.

The settled out of court back then, but fiction is was.

Agreed: Django is fiction, whilst Roots was REAL! Only the uninformed, ignorant persons will say otherwise

Django is a great movie, but Burton is correct. Just like Inglorious Basterds is not a historical depiction of WW2, Django is not meant to be an accurate depiction of slaves and masters. Tarantino is brilliant but he'll tell you himself he makes fictional movies not do***entaries.

"...the entire newsroom banned together..."

What does that mean? You all put on deodorant at the same time?

I think that you probably mean "banded together".

Lavar was not putting down Django, he was just stating the truth. Roots and Django are both great art but are vastly different. Inglorious Basterds and Schlinder's List are not the same either. One is fantasy and one is truth!

Uh ... Roots wasn't real either. Alex Haley wrote a piece of fiction mostly based on Harold Courlander's book; The African and his claim to have found his ancestors, etc. have pretty much been debunked as well.

If LeVar wants history, then he should mention the WPA project of the 1930's that resulted in the oral histories of former slaves being set down on paper. I have read some of those stories and many are horrendous, none of them easy to read.

Simply pathetic writing. The newsroom needs to band together (banned together in TMZism) and proofread each others spelling

It's "banded together", sport!

So you all "banned" together and berated the photog, eh? Maybe you should all "band together" at your local elementary school English class.
