Joey Covington
-- who played drums for the psychedelic 1960s band Jefferson Airplane -- was killed in Palm Springs Tuesday in a deadly car accident. He was 67.

According to the Desert Sun, Covington was driving alone around 5pm when his Honda Civic left the road and crashed head-on into a retaining wall. The Riverside County coroner's report says Covington was not wearing a seat belt at the time. No other car was involved.

Covington's vehicle reportedly hit the wall with such force ... it went flying onto an elevated driveway several feet above the crash site, where a nearby motel guest tried to resuscitate the musician.

The bystander was unsuccessful and Covington died at the scene. Police don’t believe alcohol or drugs were involved.

One of Covington's close friends told the Desert Sun, the drummer's wife believes a heart attack or stroke caused him to drive off the road.

In addition to playing for Jefferson Airplane -- known for songs "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" -- Covington also played for its successor band Jefferson Starship, and co-founded the rock-blues band Hot Tuna.

He and the Jefferson Airplane dazzled this young returning veteran many times! From Woodstock to the Filmore...I have all there works on CD's and my IPOD. It wouldn't be the month or week without grabbing a listen to 'White Rabbit' or Embroyonic Journey.
Rest easy, safe journey dear musical friend. Play on!

While this does not change the sadness of the auto death of Joey Covington, the original drummer for the Airplane was Skip Spence. My thoughts do go to Mr Covington's family.

The first time met Joey was at a BBQ in Palm Springs. He was one of the nicest, most humble people I've ever met and it wasn't an act. Then I heard him sit in and play the drums - Wow. Everyone loved Joey. He will be missed by all who knew him. My condolences to his wife and family.

I met that guy once at Barney's Beanery in Hollywood. He played me a new song he just finished recording. He drove a truck at the time. Very nice guy. This is surreal. Tragic.

I'd rather drive off a steep cliff, flip over, land upside down (suicide)

And one pill makes you small
And the one that Gracie gives you makes you crash into a wall.

May he rest in peace knowing he brought such musical joy to so many during a time when music did, indeed, help us to deal with the pressures of life.

Joey Covington was not married. He had three children and payed child support for ours, Jordan Iversen. He'll be missed.
