1st Overall NBA Draft Pick

Non-Hockey Player

Gets HUGE Canadian Honor

7/2/2013 11:40 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Canadian native Anthony Bennett -- the first Canadian EVER to get picked first in the NBA draft -- has just received an even greater honor ... THE KEY TO HIS CANADIAN HOMETOWN!!!

The mayor of Brampton in Ontario released a statement today, saying she presented Bennett -- who was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers last week -- with the key on Canada Day yesterday ... in honor of his incredible non-hockey achievements.

For our Canadian readers: basketball is a game in which two teams vie to shoot a ball through their opponent's hoop. No actual baskets are involved, and players tend to retain most of their teeth.

The mayor added, “All of Brampton wishes Anthony the very best with the Cleveland Cavaliers and we look forward to cheering him on during the NBA season.”

That is, as soon as they figure out what the NBA actually is ... and no, the Raptors don't count.

Take it away, Kyle's mom!

Wow TMZ...just a reminder of how poorly educated people are in the U.S; and how everyone else in the world knows it except for ego-centric Americans. They love making fun of Canada the little brother , but ever notice when they do manage to travel outside of US they put Canadia tags on their travel bags? Truth is, I don't expect journalism from TMZ, but really? Next story up on TMZ, Canadian live in Igloo's and have Penguins for pets.

Idiots. I know you think you're funny, but there's a lot more to Canadian sports than hockey. I wonder if you'll run the same lame jokes next year when we go back to back #1 overall picks.

These sorts of comments magnify your own ignorance. You may think it's funny because of your general lack of knowledge. To anyone with a brain it comes off as extremely lazy and cliche "humour" (note the "U" in the spelling).

I'm sure if Alec Baldwin maid the same comments he would be Canada bashing and a Canadaphobe.

LMAOOO at TMZ for trying to take digs at Canada. FAIL! I'm embarrassed for the educated lawyer and his staff.

This story is funny because next year's projected #1 is also from Canada. And they're calling him the next Lebron. Seems like Canada has took a big step in the sport of basketball. Not to forget about Steve Nash.

It's going to be back to back for Canada...As a Canadian is likely going to be No. 1 next year too - He's the real superstar - ANDREW WIGGINS.

Andrew Wiggins

Dear TMZ "Sports Editor",

Try googling Andrew Wiggins before next year's draft. That will be the second straight year a Canadian goes 1 overall.

And to think Joey Votto, the best player in the MLB happens to be a Canadian... What a crack staff you have, stick to the Thirty Mile Zone and leave sports to the professionals.

Great article TMZED. Ignore the haters, Who cares if bball 's inventor was from Ontario. Basketball is as Canadian as Hungarian Gulash.
