Chuck D

Listen Up White America ...

We Ain't 'Ni**as'

12/18/2013 12:30 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Public Enemy frontman Chuck D has a message for anyone buying into Suge Knight's take on the n-word -- tossing around that epithet is vile and disrespectful to the Civil Rights movement ... no matter how much it's overused in popular music today.

As we reported, Suge proposed a controversial idea this week -- eliminating the term "African-American" ... because he feels it's inaccurate ... and instead going with "ni**a."

Chuck D agrees "African-American" isn't a perfect term since a white person could technically be African-American too -- but insists the n-word ... with an 'a' or 'er' ... is too rooted in bloody history and oppression to be used loosely.

Put more poetically by Chuck -- "Being called Black in America is the struggle to keep us moving and breathing over bloody water. Being a Nig**r or [Ni**a] without the context of history is like drowning in bloody water, dragging down those yet knowing to swim."

Chuck D, a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, added -- he thinks rappers show a lack creativity when they use the n-word "more than 3 times a song. It's lazy. Especially when out of context."

In other words ... don't believe the hype.

I don't understand. They want white people to stop using the N word yet they use it among themselves and it is okay? Isn't that like double standards??????

TMZ, you're losing me, this is promoting racial tension and I don't like the path you're going down. The N word is not for public consumption and Black/White/Yellow/Red/Pink or Brown are all just American. Chuck D has it right. We all came from Africa.

While some may think TMZ is racist, obviously they are exploitive of women on a regular basis. It's apparently the name of the game, so it's up to us to sign in or sign off. As for white people "listening up" with regard to the "n" word, I would say that most white people know enough not to say that word, while more and more I read/hear about black people using it at will.

THANK YOU, CHUCK D, for an intelligent explanation of why the "n" word should not be casually thrown around.

However, I need to point out TMZ's totally over-the-top and racist headline. At first glance, you would attribute the line to Chuck D, but there is nothing in the article that states that he said this.

Sadly, it appears that TMZ is now in the race-baiting business. I guess they are about to go in the direction of the Enquirer. How long will it be before we read stories about alien sightings on Hollywood Blvd? How about chupacabra's running wild at Universal Studios?

Anything for a buck Harvey!

No one is trying to be disrespectful to Chuck D. I think we have a context issue.

I think Suge means that in reference to how he feels the system has treated him. Like when a person is called an American but treated like a slave.

I think Suge has a lot of things to get off his chest and express and he's ready to release that.

You can't take everything at face value. he didn't say everyone else should be called anything. He's expressing his individual opinion.

The great thing about opinions is that they can change.

Chuck, just do me a favor. Don't amp this up and start all the people who like to "villianize" start picking on Suge.

Suge took a back rap and a lot of heat. He's a pioneer of hip hop culture who trailblazed a lot of opportunity for modern hip hop artists and was never given credit.

Let that man express himself and evolve so he can build a new chapter in his life.

I don't think it's good to turn people against someone because you don't agree on an issue.

Suge was treated like a real public enemy whether he did anything or not because he made success through something that was greatly resisted at a time when it wasn't popular.

Suge, you don't need to comment on this one.

You have to get better at taking the criticism and letting it roll off. Don't take it personal.

If you disagree, show it it with action by proving the critic wrong. But both of you two are pioneers who come from different styles.

No beef.

Suge, express yourself without anger and see what you find.

People found your hot spots and buttons and push them. Some want to hurt your feelings.

Now you listen big dog. If something about your feelings is different than the facts, something must be wrong with your feelings.
