Washington Redskins

Govt Sucks at Grammar ...

So They Can't Take Our Trademark

The Washington Redskins just filed an appeal to get their trademark back -- and the heart of the argument is the government bureaucrats just don't get grammar.

The docs, filed today in federal court, challenge the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ruling that the "Redskins" name is disparaging to Native Americans. Registered trademarks can't be offensive to individuals or groups under federal law.

In the appeal ... the Redskins claim their 1st and 5th Amendment rights were violated -- because they didn't get an opportunity to present their case. They also say the government didn't prove the name was offensive back in 1967 when the trademark was first granted.

But here's the best part ... the Redskins claim patent officials don't understand the difference between a proper noun and an adjective. Seriously.  Here's the sentence: "Even if the term 'redskin,' used in singular, lower case form, refers to an ethnic group, the term is not disparaging when employed as a proper noun, as a team name, in the context of professional football."

The docs don't list a source for the team's grammatical argument. We suspect there are lawyers somewhere pouring over a grammar textbook right now.

The TMZ staff also have a problem; the word in the last sentence should be 'poring', not 'pouring'.

Don't like my comment about how the gov. is more concerned about a stupid name than the living conditions of poor Americans. Real P.C . TMZ!

There was not a 'single' complaint before they tried doing this... again.

Trademark office already lost this once, yet don't mind spending 'our' tax dollars going after something that only a fraction of the population find mildly offensive.

Anything to take the eyes off the 'real' issues and point fingers at others, when no one is even cryin about it.

What a Waste.

Oh, and for any that do their research, the Major Majority of Indians find the name an Honor. To be known as they were, Warriors, a compliment.

Stop with the Politically Correct and plain Political play and let the consumers decide and STFU about this already.

Now, go work on Grown Up Things that Really concern the people of this country.

Wasteful Fools.

I am representing a class action lawsuit on behalf of Oranges, Lemons & Pears against Apple. We are demanding they change their trademark to one that does not discriminate against the "Rainbow Coalition of Fruits"...I was going to represent AshyLarry as well...but Black Qu**r Bait did not qualify as a true fruit.

Nobody names their team the crappers. They picked a name they were proud of. Native Americans should embrace it.

I agree! The Washington Redskins name is very offensive and it MUST be changed!! Native American's should not have to be represented by the name Washington. Corrupt politicians don't deserve to be a part of the prideful organization that is the Redskins. Landover Redskins works for me or even Ashburn Redskins if they move closer to Redskins Park.
