Miss America Contestants Arrive in Vegas

"Where are the sashes? Who's got the sashes?" Miss America pageant volunteer Sally Romonowski darted around a luxury tour bus stocked with two dozen beauties heading from Los Angeles to Las Vegas Saturday for the weeklong competition.
Hours after rolling out at 8 a.m., the caravan of primped contestants and pooped chaperones arrived at the Las Vegas Strip for a red carpet welcoming.
It's the first time in the pageant's 85-year history that Miss America, once an icon of American femininity, will be crowned in Las Vegas, an icon of American debauchery.
Organizers hope the move from Atlantic City, N.J., will revive the cash-strapped and ratings-poor pageant. Fifty-two young women hope the changes will keep the pageant running as a tribute to grace, poise, fitness and skill. The payoff: $50,000 for college or graduate school.
"This is the Olympics for us," Miss New York Kandice Pelletier, 24, a student and Radio City Rockette from Manhattan, said on the road Saturday.

LA's Double Duty Dentist

Only in LA can you walk into your dentist's office, rinse, spit and ask for concert tickets on the Sunset Strip. But when your dentist is Dr. Grant Loosvelt, that's exactly what can happen.
Dr. Loosvelt is a super-star dentist who's made appearances on ABC's 'Extreme Makeover,' NBC's 'Average Joe' and 'The Tyra Banks Show,' to perform dental makeovers on various guests.
But at night, he's a rock star. The doctor's band, Love Child Suicide, produces pure rock 'n' roll, drawing from Hollywood's deepest roots. Loosvelt plays keyboards in the band with Zak Ambrose (vocals/guitar), James McCutchen (drums), Matt Heyerly (bass), and the band is on the verge of erupting after only three years together.
Love Child Suicide, previously known as Five Star, performs at Hollywood hotspots throughout Los Angeles, and we caught up with them... literally... during a night at the Roxy.

Police Seize Moss Cocaine Video

LONDON -- The tabloid that printed images allegedly showing Kate Moss snorting cocaine has turned over the videotape to police, a senior staffer at the newspaper said Thursday.
Moss lost contracts with H&M, Burberry and Chanel after the Daily Mirror published the pictures in September. The 31-year-old supermodel later apologized to "all the people I have let down" and checked into an Arizona rehabilitation clinic.
Police said at the time they would investigate the allegations, taking into account the impact on impressionable young people.
No one at the Daily Mirror was willing to comment on the record, but a senior staffer who refused to be identified said the newspaper had turned over the secretly captured video to police under a judge's orders. It allegedly showed Moss taking drugs with her then-boyfriend Pete Doherty, the troubled singer of British rock band Babyshambles.
Police refused to comment.
Moss has begun a career comeback. She shot an advertising campaign for designer Roberto Cavalli, and she was to appear in a television ad for cell phone-brand Virgin Mobile.
French Vogue devoted its December issue to Moss, with the cover tag line, "Scandalous Beauty."
The Vogue issue was Moss' third major magazine cover since the cocaine scandal broke. She appeared on the November issue of W and the December edition of Vanity Fair, which asked in a headline, "Can she come back?"
Petra Focuses on Children's Charity

WASHINGTON -- Petra Nemcova said Thursday she recently made a tearful return to her work as a supermodel but still devotes most of her time to the children's charity she established after recovering from injuries sustained in last year's tsunami.
The 26-year-old Czech model and her boyfriend Simon Atlee were caught up in the tsunami while vacationing in Thailand. Atlee, a 33-year-old British fashion photographer, was killed. Nemcova suffered a broken pelvis.
Nemcova recounts her story in a newly published autobiography, "Love Always, Petra" (Warner Books), co-authored with Jane Scovell. Proceeds from the book go to the Happy Hearts Fund she established last summer.
Nemcova resumed modeling in September -- punctuated by a two-day crying jag -- but said it occupies only 30 percent of her time. The rest, she said, goes to her charity, which has raised at least $1.1 million for the youngest survivors of the tsunami.
"It's not a job. It's just my passion," she told reporters at the National Press Club.

Jennifer Aniston was in rare form for the cameras, as she expressed her disdain for a paparazzo who secretly shot topless photos of the star as she stood on the balcony of her home. Aniston's tone is strong and clear as she demands boundaries from people who make a living by intruding on the private lives of stars.
In another clip, Aniston talks about her controversial GQ cover, in which one of her breasts is partially exposed. Jen says the shot was accidental and she's frankly not that upset about it. Jen's position is that she has a right to show what she want, but on her terms.
Indeed, when photogs take pictures of the 'Friends' star without her permission there can be severe consequences. As TMZ reported exclusively, Jen's lawyers went to court in England last week and obtained an order prohibiting the distribution of the secretly-shot topless photo. She's also sued the photog in Los Angeles Superior Court. That case is pending.

Pageant Asks Ex-Miss Americas for Cash

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - With its bags packed for Vegas and its bank balances sagging, the Miss America pageant is asking former winners to donate money for the scholarship that goes with the crown.
In an unprecedented step, Miss America Organization CEO Art McMaster appealed to former winners to kick in for the $50,000 scholarship, citing the pageant's new push for fundraising.
In a Nov. 3 letter obtained by The Associated Press, he noted the pageant's loss of network television revenue and said donations were needed to underwrite the Miss America scholarship. "I am asking that all of you make a donation towards this scholarship and support the organization that helped to shape all of your lives, just as you would support your alma mater as alumni," McMaster wrote.
McMaster, who announced this week that the next Miss America will be crowned in Las Vegas, did not return several telephone calls seeking comment.
The closely knit group of former winners had mixed emotions about the plea.
"I knew this program was at a critical time and, in many ways, in dire straits," said Miss America 1990 Debbye Turner. "It didn't make me think things were worse than they are. It confirmed my worst fears that we really are at a crossroads and that something powerful needs to happen."
