Sam Sheffer from theverge.com came on "TMZ Live" ... and we fully expected him to be stoked about the Lexus hoverboard (aka The Slide). Instead, he kinda ripped the gadget as a big budget publicity stunt.

Watch ... he's not saying it doesn't work at all, he's just not impressed with HOW it works.
