Celebrity Law Breakers -- Why They Get Off

6/15/2006 7:58 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Paris Hilton, Steve-O, Britney Spears, Jesse McCartney
Sometimes when celebs break the law, they're forced to face the music. But other times, well ... not so much. Some of our favorite stars have been caught recently, apparently bending the law -- on camera!!! -- yet they they seem to get off scot-free.

From underage drinking to alleged hit and run, here are some of the most intriguing recent incidents caught on tape!

Paris Hilton: Click to watch! Incident: Last week, Paris Hilton backs her Range Rover into a Honda Civic and appears to drive away without leaving a note. (Read the article: Driving While Paris)

Stakes:   In California, it's a crime to damage a parked car and drive off without leaving a note.  The misdemeanor is punishable by a maximum of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Disposition:  So far Paris is in the clear, but it's not over yet.  A source in the L.A. City Attorney's office tells TMZ that lawyers have been talking about what they can do, but so far no action has been taken.  Paris' rep, Elliot Mintz, told TMZ that Miss Hilton did indeed leave her contact information with a "parking attendant at the parking garage."

The owner of the Honda has not filed an accident report.

And you surely remember the infamous hit and run in Paris' Bentley last November with then-boyfriend, Stavros Niarchos, at the wheel.  No one was cited in that incident, either.

Paris Hilton: Click to watch!Incident:  In December 2004, Paris saw her sex tape, 'One Night in Paris,' on sale at a newsstand in West Hollywood, Calif. She decided to take a copy without paying -- and it was all caught on tape thanks to a security camera.

Stakes:  Petty theft. The first offense is punishable by a maximum of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Dispo:  Security tapes be damned! The L.A. County D.A. rejected the case, citing "a lack of sufficient evidence."  Huh?

Steve-O: Click to watch!Incident:
Steve-O, star of MTV's "Jackass" and "Wild Boys," flaunted what appeared to be a bag of pot in front our TMZ camera last November.

Stakes:  Possessing less than an ounce of marijuana is a misdemeanor in California,  punishable by a maximum fine of  $100. Possession of more than an ounce of marijuana is punishable by up to six months in jail and a $500 fine.

Dispo:  Steve-0 was not cited and he can't be, because he left with the evidence.  Interestingly, a few weeks after the incident, Steve-O told TMZ, "I didn't want to get the LAPD in trouble. But it's like if you take me to jail right now, I don't give a f**k. I smoke weed."

After TMZ showed our video to the LAPD, the department initiated an "administrative investigation" to determine if officers acted properly.  Six months later, we're told the investigation is ongoing.  (Read the article: LAPD Internal Affairs Requests TMZ Exclusive Video)

Please, with the race card. Must we forget OJ? It is about money & power, not color & creed. If everyone is so offended by the actions or inactions of the law or politicians, get off the computor, off your ass and do something. Everyone has an opinion but nobody is ever willing to do something about it. That is why the world is in the state it is in. Opinions abounding, action lacking.

Let's see, this is all in California the state that has the most liberal judes from federal down to the local jurisdiction and you wonder why lawbreakers who have money get off? Liberal judges have always legislated from the bench, rather than enforce the law. Indeed Liberalism is a godless religion.

While we SHOULDN'T be surprised that 'famous' people have been getting away with breaking the law for years, what we SHOULD be is disgusted and fed up with the way in which the legal system handles it and how the media gives these lawbreakers the publicity they seek. But then, we all know that money talks and that, if you have enough, you can buy your way in or out of any situation! Sports stars, politicians, Hollywood celebrieties, etc. are all aware that they can do whatever they want to do without worrying about the consequences because they have well-paid lawyers who will pay their way out. Treat then like any other law-breaker. Because they are famous does not mean they are better than anyone else.

I don't think it is right that the stars can get arrested for drinking and driving , and get by with it. I have had two dui's and can't drive for 5 years. this is so unfair.

The world runs on greed. Not only are Judges and Celebrates, but all of our politicians and professional sports figures wallowing in greed. If you want to know the undercurrent that this is causing, just read Patterson's book "The 3rd Degree" .

Thjis is all just further evidence of the societal decay that is plaguing America. It is sad that just a few decades ago, much of this would have been moot. Obscenity laws would have prevented much of what is now considered main-stream viewing for some of our youingest and most impressionable citizens. There was no internet, which for all it's good, has become a conduit of filth and depravity at a level never seen before in this country. Moral relativism has replaced core Judeo-Christian values - all to our ultimate detriment. A Godless, morally bankrupt society is doomed for extinction. All of this tripe plays us right into the hands of our enemies! Read Pat robertson's "The New World Order". Witness what he has written as prophecy being fulfilled!

THE FACT THAT THE HOLLYWOOD TYPES GET AWAY WITH THESE TYPE OF THINGS SENDS THE WRONG MESSAGE TO SOCIETY AS A WHOLE. WHILE THEY FEEL THAT THEY HAVE A RIGHT BECAUSE OF WHO THEY ARE, THEY LEAVE A TRAIL OF BODIES OF YOUNG FANS WHO DON'T WALK AWAY FREE BUT END UP IN JAIL. THE HOLLYWOOD TYPES ARE HELPLESS, WE SHOULD BE WORRING MORE ABOUT THE YOUNGER PEOPLE WATCHING THEM.

Well who cares if stevo wants to get high everyone in america gets high in one way or another its just cannabis, and as of paris hilton she is loaded she could buy her way out of it anyway. To the comment if it was a rapper or hip hop star then there would be a full investigation probably because they brag about killing and selling drugs. Go figure

It is no surprise. Specially in Cali. If you make the money, you get away with alot of crap the regular people dont. I agree with the statement made above this. If this was a rapper, they would be sitting in jail, or doing community service, paying a huge fine, and it would be posted all over the TV. I can go on about alot of people that should either be in jail or paying for the crime they did.
