EXCLUSIVE: Gibson Skated Twice Before

7/31/2006 2:06 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

TMZ has learned that Mel Gibson has been stopped for reckless driving two other times in Malibu but he was allowed to leave without a ticket or arrest.

As TMZ first reported, Gibson was arrested on Friday for suspicion of driving under the influence on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu -- driving 87 miles an hour. As we reported, the deputy who arrested Gibson was ordered to sanitize his arrest report to make it appear that Gibson's arrest was "without incident." In fact, The report states Gibson was abusive, violent and vulgar, and even attempted to escape.

TMZ has confirmed that approximately three years ago, Gibson was driving 74 miles per hour on Pacific Coast Highway, one mile from his house, when he was pulled over by a Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy. Sources say Gibson avoided eye contact with the deputy during the stop and even though the deputy was suspicious of Gibson's sobriety, he let him go.

Approximately one year ago Gibson was stopped again, after driving 64 miles an hour on Pacific Coast Highway -- where the speed limit is 45. Sources say that Gibson was so cocky that he was on his cell phone the entire time he was detained by the deputy. Ultimately, the deputy decided to let him go without giving him a citation.

And there's new information about Friday's arrest.

As TMZ reported, the deputy who arrested Gibson was ordered by superiors to re-write his report and eliminate all references to Gibson's bad conduct and anti-Semitic remarks. Sources tell TMZ that Lt. Crystal Miranda told the arresting deputy that Captain Tom Martin talked to Sheriff Lee Baca who expressed concern that the explosive report might leak to the media and that it needed to be re-written in a sanitized form.

Sources say Gibson, who was pulled over early Friday morning for allegedly crossing lanes at a high speed, told the arresting deputy that he was leaving home just after 2 a.m. and heading to his brother's house. The arresting deputy found a bottle of tequila in the car, 3/4 full, in a brown paper bag. We're told that Gibson told the deputy that the bottle wasn't his but, "I've had a little bit."

We're also told that Gibson, who issued a statement over the weekend, suggesting he was not of sound mind when he uttered the anti-Semitic tirade and engaged in abusive behavior, was not in fact "out of it." Sources connected with the case tell TMZ that Gibson was drunk but was in control of his senses. At one point at the Sheriff's station, sources say Gibson was "jumping like a monkey" on a steel cage and told the arresting deputy, "I'm not going to hurt you physically. I'm gonna hurt you. I'm gonna make you lose."

We're also told that deputies at the Sheriff's station were star struck by Gibson and a number of them went to Gibson's holding cell to get a look of the star. The problem for the Sheriff's department -- there's a mounted camera in the station and the deputies can be seen fawning over the actor. Sheriff's officials have called some of the officers who were caught on tape in and warned them they might be subject to discipline.

As TMZ reported, the arresting deputy was ordered by officials to take out references to Gibson's bad behavior. We're told the altered report makes no mention of the fact that Gibson attempted to flee the scene by running to his car to escape. We're also told that the officer checked a box on the report that Gibson was "belligerent." Ironically, even though officials did not order the deputy to remove that reference, they did order him to re-write the report to eliminate all references to the supporting evidence leading the officer to believe Gibson was indeed "belligerent."

Hey Kathy (#843) - I think I'm a ••••-of-a-lot more perfect than your precious melvin for two reasons: (1) I don't drive drunk and threaten cops when I'm caught (actually, I do not drink) and (2) I don't shout religious hatred at thenm after making holy snuff-flicks.

How about YOU?

Has anyone considered the cop may have been ordered to "sanitize" the report because he had been less than honest about everything that happened that night? Too many authority figures are prone to outrageous degrees of hyperbole in their reports and interactions. Cops, Correction Officers, Probation Officers, etc all "beef up" Tickets to ensure subsequent actions go their way. The rationale is that if the "perpetrator" isn't knocked hard enough for what really happened, the extra "beef" will guarantee the perpetrator/victim gets slammed a little more. In reports, officers first the whole truth, then tell a half truth, and then outright lie. It's the accepted nature and ways of our deplorably corrupt system which caters more to personal vengeance and noteriety than dignity and justice.

The fact is that on the whole, the loud obnoxious jews make a very bad name for the mellow, really nice, more assimilated jews, and the rest of their race/religion.

I am SOOO SICK of jewish self-pity and HYPOCRISY. YES, THEY criticized his movie: "Passion" and tried to misrepresent it as anti-semitic. Why are the jewish people the only ones with a special word depicting hatred of their race/lineage? The shameless self-pitying is just revolting.

In the same breath, they attack the movie as anti-semitic, and then admit to not having seen it, but it MUST be anti-semitic b/c they used to do these pogram things in the Middle Ages, so Mel's movie must be anti-semitic.
Is a movie depicting whites having slaves anti-white? No, simply historically accurate. We must be FORCED to recognize, accept their religion, and suffering, but we have no right to OUR Christian religion...

Yes folks, Jesus was rejected by his own people, as prophecied in Old Testament. Why is "Passion" anti-semitic, eh? It's the truth, and whomever has seen the movie shall see that in NO WAY WERE JEWS POORLY DEPICTED.

When certain forceful Jews stop trying to control everything that does not depict them exactly as they want to be depicted, then people like Mel, AND OTHERS, will stop criticizing.

I SUPPORT MEL. PASSION WAS NOT ANTI-semitic, and they were still waiting to get him.

But, Mel does need help with his abusing the drug alcohol. Other than that, he has the RIGHT TO SAY WHAT HE WANTS!

why are jews so sensitive about having "killed" Christ. I really don't get it. think about it. Christians have been responsible for the murder of millions of people, and I don't see them getting upset about being called out on it. Christian whites have killed other white, blacks, jews, etc...and have also been punished for their deeds.

Methinks the Jewish people are clearly quite defensive on this point.

hmmmmm.

Why can't they just tell the truth. If the Jews hadn't cared about Jesus, he wouldn't have been put to death. So, let's not rewrite history.

Clearly, Mel Gibson was not himself that night. We cannot know how he handles alcohol, his metabolism, his emotional and mental state, etc. He needs to NOT be driving drunk, and to suffer the consequences for that. As for his remarks (if your story is true) - let's show some compassion. How dare anyone judge him when he was impaired. That is cruel, and IGNORANT. Some people become out of their minds when drunk, and it isn't their true self. FInally, there was nothing anti-semitic about The Passion. Jesus was himself Jewish! Trying to rewrite history never benefits anyone.

Okay, something doesn't make sense here. If Mel Gibson was the one who produced the Passion of the Christ and knowing Jesus Christ was a Jew, why would he be anti-semetic? If Mel Gibson is, in fact, an alcoholic, he needs to acknoweldge it, check into an alcohol rehab center and make amends to everyone he has hurt and lied to.

I agree with Compassion. And I seriously question whether or not TMZ.com is failing to leave out certain parts of the whole story itself. I was reading on CNN what the sheriff's department said, that an arrest is "without incident" if no guns are drawn. Thus in this case, since no guns were drawn, Mel Gibson was arrested without incident. There's no coverup there.

And as they said, their job is to determine Mel Gibson's alcohol level, not report on some gossip that doesn't impact the issue at hand: suspicion of DUI. I never even heard of TMZ prior to this story, but I guess this is how you attract your readership -- at the expense of others. Gotcha journalism at its worst.

I do hope Mel Gibson gets help and I'm glad that information about his battle with alcoholism has surfaced as well. A member of Alcoholics Anonymous -- he clearly has tried to get help and wanted to overcome his disease. We should be worried about him, not trying to tear him down. The photos you've used to accompany your stories? So obvious. Your agenda is quite clear.

#2: Sorry, but you're comments are totally based on your fandom for Mel.

1) Jesus was Jewish
2) Hitler was Jewish
3) Mel Gibson is Catholic

Gibson has apologized for his "despicable comments" He admits to them. He's remaining vague becuase he's not sure how the spin will pan out.

Saying what he allegedly blurted out in any concious state is wrong. Excessive Alcohol removes proper judgement, aka filters and behaviour, that illicits people to do many things they oppress while otherwise sober: have sex without a condom, gamble in excess (free drinks at casinos), and say stupid stuff about fears of other cutulres they harbor.

While I don't thijnk Mel Gibson is the greatest thing, I am still disappointed he has anti-semitic feelings...as someone who was raised Catholic, I hope he didn't create The Passion to reinforce his anti-Semitic beliefs because in the 13 years I went to Catholic school, we were never taught that the Jews were to blame for Jesus' death.

Have a lovely evening.

I can't believe this bulls*** qualifies as news. We have truly become a sad nation addicted to tabloid headlines and reality TV.

I feel for Mr. Gibson as I know what it's like to struggle with alcohol, and I do hope that he gets appropriate treatment and finally finds peace, but once again I can't believe anyone is pathetic enough to consider this episode "news".

No wonder the rest of the world hates us. They see crap like this and think (rightfully it seems) that Americans are a bunch of uneducated simpletons.

I think Mel has made so much money that he doesn't need to work again for 10 lifetimes. He'll weather this one way or another.
