EXCLUSIVE: Gibson Skated Twice Before

7/31/2006 2:06 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

TMZ has learned that Mel Gibson has been stopped for reckless driving two other times in Malibu but he was allowed to leave without a ticket or arrest.

As TMZ first reported, Gibson was arrested on Friday for suspicion of driving under the influence on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu -- driving 87 miles an hour. As we reported, the deputy who arrested Gibson was ordered to sanitize his arrest report to make it appear that Gibson's arrest was "without incident." In fact, The report states Gibson was abusive, violent and vulgar, and even attempted to escape.

TMZ has confirmed that approximately three years ago, Gibson was driving 74 miles per hour on Pacific Coast Highway, one mile from his house, when he was pulled over by a Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy. Sources say Gibson avoided eye contact with the deputy during the stop and even though the deputy was suspicious of Gibson's sobriety, he let him go.

Approximately one year ago Gibson was stopped again, after driving 64 miles an hour on Pacific Coast Highway -- where the speed limit is 45. Sources say that Gibson was so cocky that he was on his cell phone the entire time he was detained by the deputy. Ultimately, the deputy decided to let him go without giving him a citation.

And there's new information about Friday's arrest.

As TMZ reported, the deputy who arrested Gibson was ordered by superiors to re-write his report and eliminate all references to Gibson's bad conduct and anti-Semitic remarks. Sources tell TMZ that Lt. Crystal Miranda told the arresting deputy that Captain Tom Martin talked to Sheriff Lee Baca who expressed concern that the explosive report might leak to the media and that it needed to be re-written in a sanitized form.

Sources say Gibson, who was pulled over early Friday morning for allegedly crossing lanes at a high speed, told the arresting deputy that he was leaving home just after 2 a.m. and heading to his brother's house. The arresting deputy found a bottle of tequila in the car, 3/4 full, in a brown paper bag. We're told that Gibson told the deputy that the bottle wasn't his but, "I've had a little bit."

We're also told that Gibson, who issued a statement over the weekend, suggesting he was not of sound mind when he uttered the anti-Semitic tirade and engaged in abusive behavior, was not in fact "out of it." Sources connected with the case tell TMZ that Gibson was drunk but was in control of his senses. At one point at the Sheriff's station, sources say Gibson was "jumping like a monkey" on a steel cage and told the arresting deputy, "I'm not going to hurt you physically. I'm gonna hurt you. I'm gonna make you lose."

We're also told that deputies at the Sheriff's station were star struck by Gibson and a number of them went to Gibson's holding cell to get a look of the star. The problem for the Sheriff's department -- there's a mounted camera in the station and the deputies can be seen fawning over the actor. Sheriff's officials have called some of the officers who were caught on tape in and warned them they might be subject to discipline.

As TMZ reported, the arresting deputy was ordered by officials to take out references to Gibson's bad behavior. We're told the altered report makes no mention of the fact that Gibson attempted to flee the scene by running to his car to escape. We're also told that the officer checked a box on the report that Gibson was "belligerent." Ironically, even though officials did not order the deputy to remove that reference, they did order him to re-write the report to eliminate all references to the supporting evidence leading the officer to believe Gibson was indeed "belligerent."

I disagree with some the posts that being drunk is an excuse to excuse bad behaviour, when one is drunk they become uninhibited and say what is really in the soul and now we know Mel Gibson is a Jew hater. I really think Mel Gibson should be held accountable for what he has said. This is Bullshit that he has had a problem with alcohol all of his adult life. Mel Gibson, get out of the rut for the reasons that you use alcohol. Lets think of a few excuses; To unwind, to relax, to using it as mood modifier (boy did it), so on and so forth. These are just built-in excuses for Mel Gibson to get drunk and wild, to say what he would not normally say, being inhibited (not drunk). The problem is Mel Gibson can not face the realities of day to day living without self medicating with alcohol. He has a problem, he should get therapy for his problem and try it without medication, sometimes it is very therapeutic. Being abusive is not one way of dealing with life's problems.

I do not portend to know what his problem is. Mel Gibson was raised in a slightly different culture then what we were here in the U.S. of A., similar, but not the same. I know for instance, getting drunk and still being able to function in Australia is a skill (sic). But here in the U.S. of A. it is something we can do with out.

I am not saying that Jews should not be held accountable for what they did in biblical times, but come on 2000 years ago? This is getting like the Muslims, they hate just hate and have for the last 1400 hundred years. And if they did not have Non-Muslims to hate then they would be killing one another, it would be Muslims against Muslim. Muslims are very cannibalistic!

While Mr. Gibson is undergoing therapy for his alcoholism and anti-Semetism perhaps he should also ask for some counselling in his reputed dislike (hatred?) of homosexuals.

The notion that alcohol = truth serum is nonsense. Anyone who has struggled with alcoholism or is close to someone who has knows this.. Alcohol serves different purposes for different addicts.

..Just playing devils-advocate (I'm no big fan of Gibson's mind you), but for Gibson, alcohol may indeed be an instrument of subconscious self-destruction. If he's full of self-loathing or perhaps feels guilty and undeserving of his incredible good fortune, then - for him - alcohol may awaken a monster that serves to self-infict injury; to take away that which he feels unworthy of having. Anti-semetic remarks and comments about "owning Malibu" are precisely the sort that this "inner-beast" knows will serve as a poison-pill for his illustrious career, particularly in light of the controversy that surrounded "Passion.." (never saw it - don't care to). I'm not defending him, nor am I saying for certain that he didn't mean these things - I'm only saying that alcohol IS NOT a truth serum.

They are those who love deeply their wife and their children but - for whatever personal demons plague them - feel they don't deserve them. When these people drink, they may say horrible things that serve to push them away. ..These comments are not a reflection of how they feel about them, but rather how they feel about themselves. This doesn't make it right! Nor does it mean that victims of abuse should tolerate and stick around for it.

Time for everyone to take a deep breath, and GET OVER IT! The guy got drunk, and made an a-- out of himself, and thank God that none of us has ever done that before. I consider this a VERY slow news week if all anyone can think about is Mel Gibson. I guess it does give Tom and Katie a break.

There are no excuses for anti-semetic comments.......it is quite sad to see some of you people sticking up for this cruel person. You should be ashamed of your selves. Poor Mel Gibson.........and all of u ignorant Jew haters.

I think its sad that if he was just a normal man he would go to jail for drunk driving as he could have killed someone. As far as his comments I feel badly for that his drunken tirade can be dismissed as he is a star so it does not matter what comes out of his mouth. In my experience alcohol brings out what you are tyring to hide. I feel badly for the Jewish movie producers and directors that launched his career.

I'm so tired of all these celebrities getting special treatment. If it was
one of us, our butts would have been in jail.

I no longer believe in the justice system...

Right now all I see is words on a web-site. News coming out of a conditioned reporters mouth ( dont shoot the messenger )..... if they have Dash-Cams like all cruisers are suppose to carry now, I would just like to see the whole thing for myself before I make a decision. Because I do not have the right to judge anyone.
From the cruiser.....into the police station should all be on tape somewhere...now lets see it........please.

And, uh.... ya , most of us have had a Tequila nite at least once. Even if it was 16 yrs. ago.

This is one man's individual and perhaps bad experiance that we all have picked up upon.It shows that this guy is just as normal as anyone else - same problems - same weaknesses.
How many of us have regreated doing something at a latter date.
Hindsight is a great verture.
Mel has fumbled the ball and he knows it - his family knows it - his friends know it - he's feeling pretty ashamed I suspect.
The most serious issue of this entire scenario is that he drove his car while not in his full senses. He could have injured someone - for that he needs to learn from this ill judgment - Had he been walking down the street and drunk it wouldn't have been such an issue - Mel - Get someone else to drive you if you want to have a drink boyo.
As for his comments - at the time he may have been so out of it that he hadn't a clue what he was rambling on about - it's called the "curse of drink".
Leave the car at home next time !!!!!!!

Once again those against Traditional Catholicism will stop at nothing to bring down not only the watered down version of what is called Catholicism today after Vatican II, but to try and set up a man who defends the faith against those like Foxman and the Hollywood elite who are secularist and definitely not Catholic

All you are doing is making those who adhere to Vatican II more Traditional, with the Traditional Church growing by leaps and bounds, thanks to Mel

Yes he drinks, but who without sin cast the first stone (Jesus said that by the way)

God bless
