Inside Scientology's Biggest Night

John Travolta: Click to watchGather a group of Scientologists together for a party and they're going to talk about little else. Such was the case at the church's 37th Anniversary Gala, held at the Celebrity Centre in Los Angeles Saturday, with guests like Jenna Elfman, Leah Remini and Giovanni Ribisi gushing over the controversial religion.

Though Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were noticeably absent, Scientology power couple John Travolta and Kelly Preston were sure not to miss the annual event. "I've been a part of Celebrity Centre for 31 years this year," said Travolta, "so every year is a celebration for me because when I found Celebrity Centre I found my life again."

Travolta definitely enjoyed himself at this year's event and was seen breaking it down to the sounds of Chaka Khan, who was a guest performer.

17. Scientology is NOT a religion. This cult follows the teachings of Ron Hubbard. Their "church" has no base in GOD. They worship nothing but themselves. Money and what it will but run their lives. They pray to no one except Hubbard. It sickens me everytime I hear the words church and religion used in the same sentence with scientology. They are followers but not of a Judea/Christian GOD..but of a man that wrote a book in the 1950s.

20. Wonder where L Ron is ... up there, or down there? What a sad life to think "self" is God. We are DEFINITELY in the end times!

21. TOM CRUSIE IS A CONTROL FREAK AND KATIE LOOKS LIKE SHE IS SUFFERING. I CAN'T BELIEVE HER PARENTS ARE UNABLE TO HELP WHEN THEY SEE HOW DEPRESSED SHE IS. TOM IS WACKED!

22. I've read most of the comments here, and I have to say that most of them make no sense at all! If you hate Scientology, you are no better than other fanatics that hate Jews, Chritians, Catholics, Muslims, etc..... Hate in any religion should not be tolerated. In todays society, it seems like the "Almighty Dollar" is all that counts! We have people starving all over the world but, the rich justify their wealth by giving minute amounts of it to charity! The accountants let them know how much they have to give. Let's face facts! Making 20 Mill a movie is excessive. How rich do people think they need to be? The President makes chump change compared to movie stars! The bottom line is that money can buy a religion too! They can afford to pray to whatever they want! It's their church!

24. Unfortunately, Chaka is indeed a Scientologist. Whoda thunk it? Who's next, Patti LaBelle? Let's hope not, but then again anything's possible with these freaks.

26. God, what a totally sick display of kookiness and hot air. Pfft. Pass. See, Hollywood? THIS is what mainstream society thinks about you coddling these pampered pets abnormal indulgences. (all the comments above, all negative towards $cientology)

27. Any belief system feels "weird" to those not used to it. I don't think it is particularly unusual for people (famous or nor) to seek emotional support, a community, a belief. I think that religions and superstitions are all about trying to feel less out-of-control in a very out-of-balance world. As understandable as that might be, my thought is that we need to use our heads and hearts even more effectively.
I worry that so many people allow themselves to become excessively preoccupied with any kind of religion, drugs, money, sex. I think when we give up healthy compassion to become narrowly self-righteous, and throw away our option to think rationally, we become less human than we might be.
The scientologists spend and demand a lot of money, apparently associating wealth with a balanced personality. Then they tie it into a mythology which justifies their focus on money. The Protestant movement did (and does) some of that, but we are so used to their ideology that we consider it normal rather than "weird." Peace.

28. I find it funny that Scientology was able to get the re-run episode about their religion from South Park shut off the air, while an episode, from 2 nights ago, was a re-run of one that blasted the Catholic Religion (all priests had fun with boys). The mother of all current religions let the spoof air! Let political commentary reign! Show the South Park episode about Scientology-don't let hollywood treat their religion like a sacred cow. If theirs was a true religion and they were to really help people, then John Travolta and Tom Cruise would send a few bucks to those in need. L Ron Hubbard must be laughing in his grave at the idiots who followed him knowing that these people believe his made up scientific crud.

29. What would the cult of Scientology do if it did not have it's clueless and sheltered 'celebrity' members giving free lip service to spread all that 'helpful' information? Even if Travolta, et al didn't, I bet TMZ got paid a pretty penny for that pr job!

Celebrities, beware. 'Celebrity Center' consumes the money and talent of their members and hounds them to promote the church. But when the work or money run low and you are not useful to the 'church' like the three you just saw, they'll spit you out into nonexistence.

30. Leah Remini is supposedly trying to get Jennnifer Lopez to join. Suddenly Leah is Jennfer's best friend. At Marc Anthony's concert in L.A. recently, Leah and her husband were in Marc's trailer before and after the concert and her and Jennifer are suddenly really tight.

First, Jennifer was into Santeria and dumped all her close people. Then she finally woke up.

Now it looks like Scientology is wooing her to counter all the bad press Tom Cruise has brought.
