Akon Apologizes -- I Didn't Know She Was Underage

5/9/2007 5:37 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

AkonTMZ has just received a statement from R&B singer Akon in response to the media firestorm over his onstage simulated sex romp with a 15-year-old during a concert in Trinidad a few weeks ago:

"First, and most important to me, I want to sincerely apologize for the embarrassment and any pain I've caused to the young woman who joined me on-stage, her family and the Trinidad community for the events at my concert in Port of Spain on April 12th.

It was never my intention to embarrass or take advantage of my fans in any way, especially those under the age of 18. That is why we tried to make sure that the club did not admit anyone under 18 in the audience. Somehow, that standard was not met.

Again, I apologize to those concerned and to all my fans and I pledge to all that we will strive to make sure this type of incident does not happen again."

That was not an apology...he's blaming the club.

I have had the pleasure of seeing who this young lady real is and all I can say that is a 15 year old girl out of control.

He apologizes to the young woman, her family, etc. saying he never meant to cause embarassment. But . . . he doesn't seem to think there was anything wrong with WHAT he did to begin with???? But that is the kind of world and mentality that we live in today. Lack of morals and no shame. But hey! This is what makes money, where the money is at, and what the fans want to obviously see. So sad!

I think the words "molest" and "rape" are a bit harsh!

Granted he took it too far but look at her! Where are HER PARENTS? LOOK HOW SHE IS DRESSED!
Also, Verizon sure didnt have a problem when they booked him knowing his lyrics. I am in no way defending him, but let's get REAL!

Whoopie do! I'm sure the girl has seen worse on tv or in the movies. Besides I remember a time when women would throw their panties on stage and flash their breasts at concerts. That girl is forever going to tell the story of how she was on stage with Akon. Should Akon practice some discretion??? Maybe. To all of you women who feel men demean women...we do it to ourselves. Does it make what they do right, of course not. But a lot of women are nothing but trash and don't respect themselves so why should anyone else respect them?

Her age is not the issue to me. It's how violent he was, the way he threw her around like a ragdoll, and his whole concept of sexuality. All of the people defending Akon, blaming the girl, etc. are the reason why the human race is devolving and becoming uncilvil and animalistic.

I would like to thank Verizon, I might even switch to their cell service now. I am also glad there are others who dissaprove of Akon's actions. We might be in the small minority, but it's good to know there are still some decent people left in the world.

SO maybe this is a good wake-up call for my sex lovin brothers and sisters - time to realize that a concert is singing and dancing...simulate the sex backstage or on the bus....if I wanted to see a porno I'd hit the pay-per-view button in my room!

If his lyrics did include what people have said they include, wouldn't you think that the concert itself might be a little questionable? If the crowd was supposed to be 18+, then that's a mistake right there of the club and that girl wasn't properly representing her family either (i'm guessing that they're religious given the father's occupation). Would I go to his show? No, well other than the fact that I hadn't heard his music before, if I had I probably wouldn't be interested in seeing him perform based on his music. There are some who do... That's a personal choice. Everyone has their own right to NOT listen to music, NOT to read books, and NOT attend concerts that they disagree with. At first I didn't make the connection between this and the Tara Reid video. Another reason not to go...

I get frustrated when I hear about sexual assaults and hear "well what was the girl wearing/what was she doing" etc. Its unfair to automatically place the blame on the female. But there are some cases (like this one) where you can't take all responsibility from someone who put themselves in a situation. The moment she was told to get on stage, that should have been a warning right there not to go, especially if the audience heard the music. I wouldn't be so enthusiastic to jump on stage with an artist whose music I wasn't sure about. I think the biggest thing is that the parents should have been more involved in the girl's life. Want a trend? Parents not taking responsibility for their children.

Last thing, if his music is in fact how it has been described here, then Verizon was wrong to hire him in the first place, or they were stupid and didn't do proper research. They didn't can him because they were outraged by his actions, they did it to save their butts. Kinda like how pepsi canned Madonna.
