Thandie Newton's Bulimia Battle

8/5/2007 12:30 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

"Pursuit of Happyness" star Thandie Newton battled bulimia for a year.

The tiny actress told People that her eating disorder started when she was a teen ballet dancer, and that she ate "nothing but cottage cheese" in order to stay thin.

Years later, after a string of emotionally abusive relationships, Newton had an eating disorder relapse. Her bulimia was so severe that she has "scars on my knuckles from where I put my fingers down my throat."

It wasn't until she went to a therapist years later that she "made the connection between shame and self abuse."

Newton has been married for the last nine years and has two daughters, Ripley, 6, and Nico, 2.

Wow, Bubsy, I cannot believe your ignorance when it comes to eating disorders as diseases. As a Registered Dietitian, I have read my nutrition books, journals, and studies for 5 years and can tell you that Anorexia and Bulimia are INDEED diseases - your logic is so flawed, it's unbelievable. Diseases don't have to be contagious to be diseases, as you contend. Eating disorders are MENTAL ILLNESSES (read DISEASES), with specific criteria for being defined as such. Your girlfriend may not have an eating disorder, but she certainly has disordered eating if she throws up her food. Let me assure you that the "'addictions" of anorexia and bulimia have physiological origins - that's why they often run in families (genetic). Mental counseling can help significantly with treating them, but they are indeed diseases in the scientific sense of the word. Thank you, Karen, for your input on this, too!!! I also suffered from bulimia for years. At least we know what we're talking about. Do some more research, Bubsy.

The scars on the knuckles comes from severe force of inserting your finger into the mouth and throat (therefore causing the skin to scrap against the skin)to produce a gag reflex to expell out the food contents in the stomach. Many people will also experience a response to the jaw muscles, while attempting to throw up, that helps the mouth to close and due to this the teeth will actually cut into the skin on the fingers and hands.

She was painfully thin in Norbit. I don't believe it is truly behind her!

Thats good that she's getting better. She is a wonderful actress. She was great in Pursuit of Happyness and in Norbit, even though I thought the movie itself was stupid, she played a good part. Good Luck to her and her family.
