ABC Talking Heads:

Owen a Laughing Matter?

9/4/2007 4:08 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Click to return to TMZ.comABC "World News Now" anchors Ryan Owens and Taina Hernandez had a hard time keeping straight faces while reporting the alleged suicide attempt of comic actor Owen Wilson. The on air duo couldn't stop laughing while announcing Wilson's dramatic ordeal.

What had the two chuckleheads so giggly? It turns out that Owens and Hernandez have the maturity of 9-year-olds, and thought that the last name of Wilson's uncle -- Hoe -- was hilarious.

The pair offered an on air apology ... two days later.

What a couple of jerks. Some may think there is a time and a place to make dumb-ass comments like that and giggle to their hearts content. I, for one think that it is extremely insensitive for two grown adults to be joking about something as serious as that. I think you will find that most people don't view Owen Wilson as one of the token "out of control" celebrities. I wish him luck and good health.

Originally I was going to call them unprofessional but the fact that the name didn't even COME UP in the story indicates to me that these two should probably not have jobs as NEWS anchors. Maybe we can get a story about a tragedy that killed thousands and they can giggle over the names... That's just disgusting.

She should have at least had respect enough to get up and leave if she knew she was going to giggle like a kindergarten little girl.

You sound like a moron, thinking his death would have been funny. Those anchors acted 9years old. But are you 5 years old and demented.

That chit is funny. I cracked up, too, when I heard. Who cares if a loser drug addict wants to die?

I find it horribly sad that these two most likely consider themselves "professionals". The female anchor probably wouldn't suffer from depression (as she found the mention of the word even funny) given that she appears to be under the influence of happy pills! How childish. Clearly the male anchor was feeling the need to justify her moronic giggles and behavior.

Oh, come on people even Owen Wilson finds attempted suicide funny or have you forgotten the ironic Richie Tenenbaum, played by Luke Wilson.

I am occasionally up late/early enough to catch this show (it's on in the middle of the night -- like 3:30 am -- and these two are constantly cracking up. It drove me crazy for awhile until I came to learn that it seems to be a requirement of the show to be "wacky." See the following about "World News Now" from Wikipedia:

World News Now (often abbreviated as WNN) is ABC's overnight news program. Its presentation is typically lighthearted, irreverent and comical. Several well-known news personalities, including Thalia Assuras (CBS News), Aaron Brown (CNN), Alison Stewart (MSNBC and NPR), Liz Cho, and Anderson Cooper (CNN) have anchored WNN early in their careers.

The show is produced and airs live in three half-hour segments from 2:00AM ET through 3:30AM ET, Monday Morning-Friday Morning. At 3:30ET, many local affiliates rebroadcast the show (in some cases multiple times) until 4:30AM local time at which time America This Morning is aired. A WNN anchor usually also anchors America This Morning, back-to-back.

Due to its informative and yet irreverent treatment of the news, WNN has numerous fans. Many of its fans record the show and use it as a substitute to early morning news broadcasts. There are also several fan sites.

Geez, there's more too. Owen Wilson's attempted suicide isn't the only thing that strikes them funny. Follow the links on youtube and watch these two laugh their way through reports on the war in Iraq and breast cancer.

ABC News is an embarrassment.

It's sad and disrespectful that they couldnt refrain from being so childish. Granted tmz is quite the smearer, there is a lot to say when journalists are so adament about being taken seriously but yet these are acting like children when a family is already going through so much. I think they should be repremanded and that it shouldn't have taken 2 days for the network to realize what an ass they made of themselves.
