Feds Investigating Docs Who Prescribed to Heath

2/28/2008 12:44 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

TMZ has confirmed that federal drug enforcement agents are investigating at least two MDs who prescribed drugs to Heath Ledger.

Immediately following the actor's death, DEA reportedly subpoenaed several documents from the NYPD and the Medical Examiner to try to determine exactly where Ledger got his cocktail of prescriptions that eventually caused his death. The agents are looking into whether these drugs were properly prescribed by physicians.

"30. YES....what a great idea. Let's blame the doctor's who have given up basically their entire youth (needed to study hard in high school, then actually PAY money to go to college and study even harder, then PAY even more MONEY to go to medical school - not being able to indulge in their own partying due to the high academic standards they much sustain). Then when they actually start out as a doctor, they need to pay back hundreds of thousands of dollars in school loans, while paying HUGE malpractice insurance policies. Ya see......they give up so much of their lives to benefit mankind. Then it takes idiots like this to abuse what the doctor has given him. So thank goodness for those high malpractice policies they carry so that when they get sued for doing thier job (helping someone sleep or taking away pain), their own families don't suffer at the hands of idiots like this who try to blame the doctor. And you all wonder why doctor's need to charge so much money. Thank you HL and all the other idiots of the world. It really makes me want to send my kids to medical school."

it is unfortunate when those doctors are sued. i think many people forget that doctors aren't some god who can fix anything that is wrong with us. then again, there are some cases of clear malpractice in the name of finances and the doctor's in Heath's case should be investigated. it is true that most doctor's are good people who just want to benefit society - but since the pharmaceutical industry began booming and doctors were sponsored by those companies, many doctor's became more interested in presribing "guinea pig" medications (meaning they had not even been approved by the FDA!) so they could get a free trip to hawaii! remember how your doctor would have all those pens with the name of a new drug on them? thank goodness this isn't as much of an issue anymore as steps have been taken to stop those companies from sponsoring doctors with free luxuries.

although in heath's case Im sure they had no clue of his drug abuse issues if he had any.

I thought some of the prescription medications were given to him by a doctors in England? I guess I am confused. To me it sounds like he was "doctor shopping", which is apparently illegal. If Heath did not list the medications that he was currently prescribed by another doctor - how could the doctor who prescribed it be at fault?

I have a feeling this is NOT the doctors fault but Heaths. It's good that they are investigating it but I think in the end, nothing will result. I just hope that these doctors reputations don't get slander in the process. I am glad that none of the doctors names have been released, as it is VERY possible that they are NOT to blame.

In the end, it is Heaths fault for his death. I love him and I am going to miss him but the fact is -- when you are prescribed medication.. The doctor, the pharmacist and the pamplets that come with the medications explain how to take the medications. Everyone needs to read the pamplet that comes with your medications, as they hand them out for a reason.

Heath was a smart guy- there is no way anyone can tell me that by ingesting all those different medicines - he didn't know he was risking his life. Perhaps, he forgot how much he had taken...perhaps, he took more in a slur of events but ultimately nobody is to blame but HEATH.

VERY sad but it's true.

I understand the investigation of these doctors but to try and place
blame on them, as some posters are suggesting is ridiculous.

Just like guns don't kill people, people kill other people...

Medications, besides on rare occasions, don't kill you unless you
abuse them. He clearly was abusing them and died as a result. There
are reasons why these medications are made. They are medically
necessary for some people but it gets ruined when people abuse them.

It's not the meds that killed Heath. It was his ABUSE of the meds.
Don't get it twisted and start blaming others for his death. That is
unfair. If he was overprescibed, then the doctors should get in
trouble with the DEA for that because that is illegal but for people
suggest they get brought up on charges of murder is absolutely insane

HE took the medications. He is the one who decided to do that, not
the doctors. That's like blaming a gun dealer for a persons suicide.. Or blaming Wal Mart for selling butchers knives to a homicidial maniac.

It was Heath that did this to himself.

I am still saddened by his death but let's call a spade a spade.

(Now Anna Nicole Smiths doctors are totally different story because those were heavy duty drugs she was being prescribed..)

No one to blame but himself. You would have to be awfully naive to think taking all of those medications together would be okay. These medications are over prescribed, but blame the taker.

If the doctors prescribed these drugs to him illegally, then they need to be held responsible. Whether Heath "sweet talked" them or not, it doesn't matter. No one ever said he was a saint. But if he had an addiction to these drugs, these doctors knowingly handed him a loaded gun without even thinking about it. They are just as guilty.

My god, anyone else OD's and it's just too bad. Some actor does the same damn thing and the Feds get involved. This is just stupid, dumb, rediculous and should be stopped. If Mischa gets off her charges we the people should be slapped for letting it happen.. Why don't we protest all of this? I mean my god when will people pull this kind of crap back into perspective..it's gone too far.

The prescription forms required for Oxycontin and oxycodone are duplicate Rx forms, requiring notification to two separate agents to be on file. This is because narcotic prescriptions are so subject and prone to abuse, within the medical community and outside of the medical profession. Despite this, there are doctors, nurses and other medical staff who steal these drugs from hospitals and pharmacies and sell them illegally. There are also doctors in financial straits who sell the drugs illegally, or prescribe them for their celebrity patients with little oversight. They are risking their careers when they do this, but it is done all the time. When the patient of such a doctor dies, the oversight agency, such as DEA, has every right to investigate, as they should. Otherwise, unscrupulous doctors would work the system, to the danger of their own patients, as we've seen with Heath's death. These physicians are sometimes addicts themselves. The regulators need to clean up these situations, to prevent further irresponsible dispensation of dangerous narcotics to patients who REALLY DON'T NEED THEM! Abusers make it harder for everyone else who need these medicines to get taken care of. Yes, Virginia, there are bad doctors.

$100 a pill? I have health insurance and got a bottle of 80 for my $15.00 copay. Sucks to be uninsured, I guess.
