Another UFC Fighter Killed

12/26/2008 7:46 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Justin Eilers was found shot and killed on Christmas night -- the second MMA fighter to die in a week.

Eilers died of a single gunshot wound to the chest, according to KIVI TV in Idaho. James Malec, the suspect, is reportedly the boyfriend of Eilers' mom. Malec has been arrested and charged with second degree murder and held on $1 million bail.

According to Sherdog.com, Eilers had a career fighting record of 19-7-1 and went 1-3 in the UFC.

On December 18, Justin Levens and his wife were found dead from gunshot wounds in a home in Laguna Niguel, Calif.

Party 'till you die!

Well some do take drugs and they almost always get any titles and even their contracts stripped form them. Shawn Sherk got nailed and David Diaz got popped for pot. I have heard rumblings that that him testing positive might have been the reason he left the UFC (still just a rumor, so take as just that, but he also tested positive at Elite too). It's not so much the drugs, but the fact that many fighters come from broken families and rough upbringings and others just use it as a legal vent for aggression. Sure, there are lots that are just excellent athletes and have had a happy life, but many have not. Sometimes the aggression spills out into real life, because these are real people with real problems. When your whole life is centered on fighting, sometimes keeping it in the ring doesn't always work. A great example of this is Chris Leben. He had major problems in his life from many things and he has really shown huge amounts of maturity and self reflection since taking everything seriously! I really admire the guy now for the profound changes he has made. Hell, even Junie Brown seem to follow in his footsteps and grow up a bit! As for Justin Eilers, until more facts come out, I wouldn't want to speculate on what was the cause, but he's dead and that just sucks, especially having it happen on a big holiday! Holidays like Christmas are notorious for bringing out the bad side of people! It's just too bad that he had to die for whatever reason!

Punchy

#12, this is about a UFC fighter not Bristol's womb, and who cares? Now, about the UFC fighter, that is a tragedy. Statistically speaking, domestic violence and suicide rates go up during the holidays. The theory that UFC fighting/fighting in general, attracts individuals with pent up aggression/or pre-existing personal problems, is very interesting and a viable theory.

#16 & # 17, Statistically, homicide is usually within the same group, black on black, mexican on mexican, white on white, etc......... Murderers, keep it in the family, so to speak.

Looks like the safest place for an ultimate fighter is in the ring.

Party 'till you die!

I just checked back in to see the comments, Honk if you are Horde, while I do not fight myself (I'm in my 40s and it's mainly a young person's game), I do know many that do compete. I know an extremely good local fighter that may go to a big venue soon and he is a reformed gangster and ex-prisoner who has changed his life for the better. His philosophy (and he is very intelligent, just not well educated) is that he wishes to fight with honor, but he admits that he still enjoys fighting and got very good at it in prison using it to survive. He says it is a good outlet for his aggressive nature and after fighting for his life in prison, he has little fear of being hurt in the ring. He has the scars to prove it too. He views street fighting as too dangerous and he just doesn't get paid for it like he can in sanctioned MMA fights. His strong desire to stay out of prison helps motivate him to keep it in the ring. So ironically, his devotion to MMA keeps him off the streets and out of prison. He says he hopes to earn enough money to get a GED, go to college, and eventually start a business. He certainly has the willpower to do it and there are many similar stories to his. I am really rooting for him for many reasons!
Also, as far as Justin Eilers goes, who knows what the deal was? I'm sure we will find out, but guessing is just that right now. Many well known MMA fighters also suffer from the gunslinger syndrome, where they are always and frequently challenged by people with chips on their shoulders and are out to prove something. Some bring it on themselves as witnessed by Jean Claude Van Damme, who talked crap by all accounts and was cleanly knocked out by Chuck Zito ( an amateur boxer, Martial artist, and ex Hell's Angel- he was in the HBO show OZ) in a well known club. This actually helped Zito's career a bit and detracted from JVD's.
And my response about drugs was to another post, which was strangely changed around. Just like any other sport, some people will do anything they think will help them and especially if they think they can get away with it. This has been minimized to a large degree as testing is almost universal now in all leagues. People will always try though and things like HGH and steroids definitely do alter aggression levels. Many times, if drugs are involved, there are more of the street kind mixed with alcohol, but I am NOT implying this was the case here in any way! I'm going to check some of the MMA blogs out to see if someone there knows more of what happened.

Yup, afraid of that. Argument started with the girl, crap thrown by Justin, words exchanged, other guy afraid (not surprisingly), guy
pulls gun, Justin is dead. Sucks! dvldoc had it right and I was afraid of the same thing. It's not a hard thing to imagine why a fighter would get shot in a domestic dispute.
