Joaquin Phoenix brought his phony stony act to David Letterman last night -- and while Letterman thought he was catching the wannabe rapper in an altered/inebriated state, it's Dave who was likely hoodwinked.

We've been on to Joaquin's scam for weeks now -- no doubt he's shooting a mockumentary with Casey Affleck ... pretending he's quitting acting to become a rap star -- even though his singing sucks -- and showing how the media will fall for it.

In Dave's defense -- he ripped the guy apart, ending the interview with "Sorry Joaquin couldn't be here tonight."

1. I liked Jaoquin very much as an actor but in this role he creeps me out. If he's sick/on drugs, I hope he gets some help. If he's faking, then he should just go away because he probably screwed up his career in Hollywood now.

2. I saw this last night on Letterman's show and was wondering who the hell that was; was it a bit? Then I looked at guest lineup and Joaquin was one of them. It was interesting.

6. I used to like him...now I can't stand him. He should of gone on to do big roles, but he turned himself into a 'kooky Hollywood actor'. Such a shame!
