War Erupts over MJ's Memorial Cost

7/9/2009 7:00 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

The battle over the cost of Michael Jackson's memorial has officially begun -- as an L.A. city councilman and the president of AEG traded licks today about who's responsible for the ceremony's hefty price tag.

War Erupts over MJ's Memorial Cost

Councilman Dennis Zine told KTTV today that taxpayers "are getting ripped off" because AEG made $50,000 by charging the media to use risers outside the venue. Zine said AEG should grow a pair and cough up some cash.

AEG President Tim Leiweke immediately swung back, saying Zine was out of line because the company helped secure funds for the L.A. Lakers championship parade last month.

So the question is...

AEG only made 50,000.00 that is nothing compared to what the LAPD spent on a pre-pakaged lunch costing 13.95 for each lunch multipled by 400. why not go to subways? AEG should not flip the bill, let the city figure it out, by the way, the LAPD (hungry little piggy's) should have packed a lunch or came with 10.00 bucks. $ 48,000.00 to feed thier mouths is a crime.

To the person who said the state holds the death certificate until you pay the bill if the state pays for the creamation ect...... Not true, at least in california. When my ex-sister in law passed away I had custody of her children, made all the arrangements for her creamation and disposition on behalf of the children and I got copies of the deth certificate, I only had to pay for them and being that I couldn't afford things and she was on welfare the state offered.

Michael Jackson was a tax paying citizen and gave millions to that dam city. He probably paid 1.4 million dollars in taxes in 1 month. It is the city's responsibility to provide police protection and security whenever necessary. ANYWAY, the people and fans that came to L.A. for the memorial spent millions while they were there on shopping, hotels, site seeing, restaurants. GET OVER IT.

Hellooooo people. The Jackson family did not plan this memorial, nor was it their memorial. This memorial was put together specifically for the fans, not the family. The family is in no way obligated to this debt.

Why don't the Jackson's pay? Or all you fans that hung that cried for 12 days straight. You're the people that wanted the circus to come to town. Pay up!

This Jackson family has MILLIONS upon MILLIONS of dollars to its name. And they want the city of LA or this company to foot the bill for a memorial that THEY wanted for THEIR son??? What a bunch of spoiled ignorant people. This family is definately used to getting what they want, no matter how stupid. No wonder Michael had no problem becoming an addict even when surrounded by people. People are afraid to tell these people the truth. They are a regular family like anyone elses. Michael was a gifted singer and entertainer. NOTHING MORE.

What they need to do is start printing and sell the programs they had for the memorial. Everyone is asking on different sites where they can purchase the program. (besides e-bay). People all over the world would buy these and would pay for shipping. I would buy one! This would put a dent in the debt.

Last I heardwhen a person dies their FAMILY is responsible for all expenses incurred for the funeral/memorial.
Also, isn't that why people have life insurance????

97 i agree it's a good idea. TMZ we've posted some really good ideas today, why don't you post something that the people in charge of all of this can read and maybe use some of our ideas.

I have real mixed feelings on all this, for most "Special Events" in any Club, Hall or City, etc... there are contracts, and requirements regarding security. The person putting on the function is usually responsible for that expense, however AEG from what I understand agreed to have the event right where MJ had been practicing just days before..... that alone was a huge expense. Yes, I think MJ's Estate should contribute for Security, as well as AEG, and the City.... all three benefit from this, no question.

I also have to say what a wonderful Daddy Michael must have been to his children, that is so evident after the world has gotten to know them.... any man can be a Father but it takes a special person to be a Daddy and he was that...... thank you Paris for reminding us all, god bless you and your brothers.

The city is not paying for the memorial but for the security. It's normal for a city to pay for police services. I don't understand why you guys think the city is paying for the memorial.
