DJ AM's Death -- Not a Suicide

8/31/2009 1:20 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

DJ AMLaw enforcement sources directly connected with the death of DJ AM tell us that his death was the result of an accidental overdose and not a suicide -- and there is a tragic, ironic twist of fate.

Our sources say DJ AM, a recovering addict, developed a dependency to Xanax and other benzodiazepines (a group of drugs used to treat anxiety) as a direct result of the plane crash a year ago. We're told AM (aka Adam Goldstein) developed a tremendous anxiety over flying -- something he had to do frequently for his job.

We're told doctors began prescribing Xanax and other anti-anxiety medications to relieve his fear, but the benzos triggered a relapse into addiction. We're told benzos are particularly dicey for recovering addicts.

Our sources say DJ AM's relapse was "recent" -- he was not abusing for a prolonged period of time before his death.

We're also told the OD had "absolutely nothing to do with his recent breakup."

Our sources say the evidence strongly indicates cause of death will be a combination of crack cocaine and benzos.

What is the deal with everyone choosing to take so many diffrent drugs and then dieing and then people ruling it an accidental overdose? There's no accident about a recovering crack addict taking way too much crack one night while on other meds. To me this is neglegence. This is suicide! For anyone to do that much amount of drugs or combination of drugs to then die because of it is no accident. No offense against DJ AM and Heath Ledger, but what kind of message is the media sending out to young people who follow these celebs and look up to them? "It's okay to mix drugs, it's not suicidal, it's accidental?" WTF

Seriously

Darn it DJAM! I PROMISED my son that you were not on illicit drugs. I assured him that when the autopsy came back they would find you had died of natural causes! I feel sad for you and your family and close, because your last choice was a very, very bad choice. You didn't want it this way. SHEESH! Superman made it out of that plane crash only to be killed by Kryptonite. EVERYONE knows that kryponite will kill Superman! Darn it DJAM......

This guy survives a plane crash September last year and gets a second chance at life and instead of appreciating it and respecting that gift of life, he says to himself, I'm going to do crack? Doesn't make any sense. Seems really stupid!

Tell me again why this guy is in the news. He is just a DJ for God's sake. What's up with this minute by minute coverage?

##### ATTENTION ####### If you haven't noticed, the common denominator in all these accidental OD's is always XANAX. Its safe when used alone and within recommended dosages however, it doesn't mix well with other commonly abused drugs. I had a good friend die the same way and started noticing it with celebs ie Anna Nicole, her son Daniel, Heath Ledger, Billy Mays, DJ AM, and Michael Jackson.

All your base are belong to us

It's interesting how this article kinda sanitizes the situation. Quick to claim not a suicide, and says lots of feel-sorry-for-him blah-blah-blah. His story seems similar to MJ's. I now understand fully when people talk about unfair coverage of Michael Jackson.

No cocaine/heroin/etc was found in MJ's system and they took their careful time with his autopsy. Yet we were hearing how much of a junkie MJ was and the pressure of the concerts etc. etc. I think many were suprised they didn't find anything more exotic or stuff in far greater quantities in MJ's system.

To amplify things, they found cocaine in Billy Mays' body, and the media just let that rest relatively quietly. Wasn't that the same 'respect' that some were asking for MJ? Yet, they went back in the past and dug up every ugly story of his life, and ran them again, callously. Sometimes even things which were already dealt with by the courts (and a legal verdict given) the media went back speculating all over again.

Sheesh. (Shakes head in despondence.)

RIP MJ, DJ AM, TK.

Try again TMZ. How does someone jump from Xanax to crack AND accidently overdose on crack? There are people walking around high on crack 24-7! Something else happened!

this is why doctors need to become more specialized in recovering addictions. they seem to neglect that there are many individuals out there who are recovering addicts and prescribe medication that would ultimately kick them back to addictive behavior. this also goes to those who are recovery additics, please inform you doctors of your condition, if the doctor knows what he is doig he will know not to subcribe medication that will make you relapse. ultimatelly its communicating with your doctor on habits...
