DJ AM's Death -- Not a Suicide

8/31/2009 1:20 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

DJ AMLaw enforcement sources directly connected with the death of DJ AM tell us that his death was the result of an accidental overdose and not a suicide -- and there is a tragic, ironic twist of fate.

Our sources say DJ AM, a recovering addict, developed a dependency to Xanax and other benzodiazepines (a group of drugs used to treat anxiety) as a direct result of the plane crash a year ago. We're told AM (aka Adam Goldstein) developed a tremendous anxiety over flying -- something he had to do frequently for his job.

We're told doctors began prescribing Xanax and other anti-anxiety medications to relieve his fear, but the benzos triggered a relapse into addiction. We're told benzos are particularly dicey for recovering addicts.

Our sources say DJ AM's relapse was "recent" -- he was not abusing for a prolonged period of time before his death.

We're also told the OD had "absolutely nothing to do with his recent breakup."

Our sources say the evidence strongly indicates cause of death will be a combination of crack cocaine and benzos.

What a bunch of trash. There is no proof the drug addict ever kick his drug habit.

In fact there is plenty of proof he was never in recovery. Bottom line another drug addict dead. A loser is dead get over it already.

Mean while Hollywood continues to be enablers to many drug addicts taking advantage of then to make a buck while giving them their own reality show.

Who is next loser in Hollywood who is going to die of a self induced drug overdose? I can't wait to find out.

If Las Vegas was smart they would start a betting line on who will be the next "so called star" to die.

Lorry I don't believe Dr's killed AM. It was the crack. He was probally
in alot of pain from the burns. He was on meds. He took up crack again.
1 plus 1 = OD. That's the way it rolls.

TMZ shame on you. You first reported "DJ AM found dead was devasted over breakup." Now you claim OD had nothing to do with the breakup. Harvey, this is not like you to not have all your facts straight before you report it. Which is it? A little disappointed. Instead of having so many captions on this breaking story, try to have a little more facts before stating something that contridicts previous stories. I'm just saying!!!1

The point is, nobody really knows why he died this night? Yes, one can speculate but the fact is, he was depressed for good reason after the trauma and loss he suffered. Sadly another life has been cut short. There's sounds like there was alot of issues that triggered his relapse. Why this night, only god knows. Accidental or not.

God speed and may you rest in peace. We will pray for you and your family.

I'm glad to hear it is most likely an accidental overdose. It doesn't bring him back but it will make it easier for his friends and family. DRUGS KILL.

I have been on Xanax for 20 years. I don't have any urges to use other drugs. Xanax reduces anxiety, quite the opposite of what cocaine does. It is extremely tough to take so many Xanax that you die or even really have terrible effects. You just sleep.

In fact, I have been told that when people do too much cocaine and are bouncing off the walls, giving them a benzo actually helps slow their racing hearts and may calm them down some.

While obviously Adam is dead and crack cocaine is involved, I just don't see how the benzos could have contributed since they have the opposite effect. But we'll see and it doesn't really matter anyway. He's gone and that's a shame.

why?

Poor Adam, he was hurting. He was still coping with the nightmare of the plane crash. He broke up with his girl. Any addictive drug can trigger a relapse in an addict. That is the science of the disease. Some are more susceptible than others. Goldstein had a troubled past. It was a miracle he wasn't dead sooner. People who knew him fell in love with him. He understood how bad life could suck and he was grateful for everything he had. He suffered for the lost souls in the plane crash. He was a loyal friend. People were proud to call him friend. Everyone who new him loved him. People who didn't know him loved him for the courage it took to overcome his troubled youth. To all you haters out there, all I can say is you really scare me. I would hate to come across you in the real world because your minds are sick and twisted and there is no love in you; only jealousy, foul dirty thinking, resentment, anger and stupidity.TMZ has just become a place for the ultra low life's to come and type the lowest base crap found anyplace is Cyberspace. You have ruined what used to be a fun place to comment about the celebrities. You have turned it into a place of disgust and hate. No one wants to come to this disgusting site outside of you crude disgusting people. I'm here because I wanted to learn more about what happened to DJ, when I read these comments I just had to speak out. Could you suck anymore if you tried. Good bye TMZ. Thanks to the skanks and perverts and haters I will never disgrace myself by being a part of these posts again. RIP Adam, thank God in Heaven people like you are in this world.

Okay people,
Let me explain something, I am a recovering addict so I know this. It is not "dicey" to say mixing crack and Xanax is deadly. IT IS A VERY DEADLY COMBO. The two drugs have the opposite effect on the heart so it can be shocking for it. It goes from being reved up to being artificially slowed down. It's like a speedball. Taken within a short time span of each other, the heart gets one hell of a work out. I am lucky to be alive. Godspeed Adam Michael.

Just saying if xanax was a "killer" or a "gateway drug" of any sort, Dr.'s would not Rx it to anyone.

Join us on Planet Earth, won't you Sandyland? Xanax is a highly addictive drug, and Drs don't give a rats butt about you! Only about your money, trust me on this. Yes, benzos are used for detox, but they are themselves extremely addictive.
Doctors in this day and age of huge insurance companies are desperate for money, desperate! Most of them have long since forgotten their Hippocratic oath, no more Marcus Welby around. If it pays, they will do it, and many of them are being paid by the big pharmaceutical companies to push the latest drugs. Yes.

Maybe they should do a show on a person who actually has sustained sobriety and is now a licensed counselor.
Another loss due to addiction.

GD benzodiazepines again! The article is not saying Xanax or any other benzo is a "gateway" drug that leads to other harder drugs. It's saying these shouldn't be prescribed to addicts & they shouldn't be unless they are in the early stages of detoxing to help alleviate the withdrawal symptoms. This is a well know fact in the field of addition. It's also something this guy probably should have know if he were an addict in recovery for 10 years like he said he was. If he were seeing someone(psychiatrist or counselor specializing in addiction) they would have told him this. Maybe he didn't disclose it to them. Anyway, these drugs are way overprescribed. They are also very addictive for people who are "predisposed" to addiction.

When doctors prescribe drugs, it doesn't mean to ABUSE them and smoke crack to top it off. He was talented, but obviously very arrogant to think he could mix crack and Xanax, and live to see another day. Even a homeless, toothless uneducated street corner bum knows that much.
